My 10 year old little girl has seasonal allergies that flare up every year around this time. She was coughing yesterday, so we let her stay home just to make sure she didn't develop a fever. She's fine, it's just her yearly allergies, but today at school all the little assholes kept calling her corona, and making fun of her.

She came home crying today... Feels bad man...

As of now, the DC area is unchanged. Traffic is still shitty. No one is teleworking. Hell - we're going to a convention next week where about 20% of it is Asian companies. I'm curious to see how empty it will be.

Really hoping this virus dies on its own and doesn't become a version of a new extra bad-ass flu, mutating and culling 2 - 4% of the people it hits every year.

For something that for the vast majority of us is nothing worse than a slight cold, I can't help but think this is a bit overly-crazy?

I mean, no one likes to get sick, but unless your elderly, the risks from this thing seem pretty tiny (a fraction of a percent deadly for those of us in our 30s) And kids seem mostly immune.

                          So...mass panic, markets crashing, etc?

This seems like a pretty simplistic way of looking at this.

The highest risk category appears to be those aged 65 or older. Which, in the United States, is a demographic that's still in the tens of millions.

                              47.8 million

The number of people age 65 and older in the United States on July 1, 2015. This group accounted for 14.9 percent of the total population. The age 65 and older population grew 1.6 million from 2014.

That isn't a "tiny" group that's at risk. That's a lot of people who are at risk of getting the disease, and potentially dying. This is also assuming we have enough hospital beds and respirators for everyone should they all get sick at the same time. As we saw in Washington, a nursing home basically got wiped out once they were exposed. And this is even without overcrowding and a shortage of equipment.

Pat Herrick's mother has lived at the facility in the Seattle suburbs for seven years. The center is now the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. Six deaths have been tied to the Kirkland facility, King County officials said, and friends and family of its 108 patients have been barred from visiting.

More than 50 residents and staff will be tested after experiencing symptoms, Dr. Jeffrey Duchin, health officer for Seattle and King County, has said. Wednesday, he told reporters that at some point all residents will be tested.

Think of your family. The immediate and then not-so-immediate family. Anyone over 60 in that group? Now randomly select 1 or 2 out of 10 and pretend they just died. Nothing you could do, they're just gone now. And people online are talking about it like "it's just a flu for old people" and the President of the United States is saying "just go to work and it'll go away like a miracle." Knowing that if that happens and your family members get exposed, there's a good chance a couple of them won't be around this Thanksgiving.

The markets aren't crashing so much as they are starting to react to the fact that production out of mainland China has been slow or completely offline in some industries for a month or so. Which has had an impact on actual supply to the U.S. in a lot of products.

China’s trade likely plunged in January and February on the combined effects of the extended Lunar New Year holiday and the worsening coronavirus outbreak, highlighting the impact on supply chains that continues to ripple through the global economy.

Exports and imports are forecast to have slumped in the period, with shipments out of China dropping by about a fifth, according to a Bloomberg survey. The release on Saturday will be the first time the government has combined the data for the first two months of the year, an attempt to smooth out the usual volatility from the Lunar New Year break.

However this year is anything but usual, as factories remain far below capacity and consumers stay at home due to government restrictions and fear of the disease. The shutdowns pushed the official purchasing managers’ index in February to the lowest level on record, and more pain could be in store if demand in developed economies craters due to outbreaks there.

The markets aren't responding to "oh scary virus" so much as they are responding to real world data regarding trade, and a large amount of uncertainty about our government's inept response, and what this means for future trade and certain industries like healthcare and tourism. Markets hate uncertainty.

I'm not concerned with convincing people to pay attention anymore, as I believe the tipping point for general awareness will hit this weekend.

Even the most ardent skeptic is going to wake up real soon.

NJ is considering closing all of its schools. The second something that big happens, there is going to be a mild panic in the country.

Stores will get rushed, corporations will start letting people work from home, etc. etc.

It's here, the time to prepare is now.

Who then hide the number of tests done on their site probably because it makes the Trump administration look bad?

BC in Canada which had done more tests then all of the states combined up to that point and only has a population of roughly 5 million?

It's not the media going nuts it's all the major health institutions around the world and medical experts, they are all ringing alarm bells.

WI just got kits in numbers to start testing this last Monday so it is hard to go back in time and test back to December 2019 when the virus first hit in the US. Before then they would have to send out of state so they would rarely test.

(Test kits have to be made, and guess what we relay on China to make our goods because we have rebuilt our economy to push manufacturing over seas. Shocking but we do not have unlimited test kits for every possible virus just sitting around waiting for a outbreak to happen sitting in warehouses across the US.)

Prob why they did not bother to test me in Dec. and I had every symptom when I went to hospital. But they did have me stay away from other people and put me on anti viral meds for two weeks. Still ended that flu with pneumonia that lasted another couple weeks. My cousin, who is a doctor looking back, thinks I might have had it. Which means I could have exposed my whole family, work place and church and who knows how many others. Many of them got colds and flu over the next few weeks after. No one died.

You were giving us beef about overreacting to this pandemic and you think you might have gotten it already?

                                            Glad you got well.

Oh, we already stocked up several days ago. Costco here is wiped out despite limits on quantity. We're still taking precautions, etc. Just... everyone's acting like this is really bad, and I'm not seeing it, aside from the ROT be far higher than anything else.

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that you should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.

That sums it up, yep. If I know this company - 22 years so I think I do - they will say and do nothing until our techs begin to get quarantined. And there's precedent for that behavior.

At the last minute when 20% of the workforce is out they'll issue some really impressive sounding language about having it under control, and then "suggest" the rest of us work from home.

I can only smh some days.

I guess I was quoting the feelings of the doctors in my family that pointed out to me when I was actually panicking earlier on and they said to me this virus has been here since the beginning of December people have been getting sick from it but we have not been able to test for it but for the vast majority of people the effects are so mild, cold or slight flu. They never go to the hospital so no authority would ever know. I live/work in an university town at a bank so am around the second dirtiest thing on the planet after a toilet. Money. Odds are against bankers not getting or already having got Covid-19. Also with Covid-19 you can get it multiple times you do not build a resistance to it like with other flu strains. This is the flu that keeps on giving.

Any way I hope I did not get it and my cousin is wrong. But who has ever heard of a flu that lasts for a month and a half. It kept taking me down and then coming back for another round. Was horrible.

Anyways I got this cool info today as well as signed up for new pandemic Emails direct from the CDC that should start soon I will post anything cool they send.

These prodocts are confers to kill Covid!

Ah apologies, I thought it was at me ... yes there are and it's likely to get worse, which is my primary concern at the moment. My area can be dicey enough as it is. Lots of good folks here, but a higher than usual number of potential flakes too...including one or 2 in my own family

One of the deacons at my church got FluA last week took him out for the whole week. He is a super healthy guy normally never gets sick so he did not get the pneumonia part of it. He could not even get out of bed for 3 days in the middle of it. On day two his dad, down south, passed away and he could not even get out of bed to be with his family for 4 more days.

By day 5 he was back on his feet, not 100% but not infectious so he was able to go be with the family. If it had been Covid he would have never seen anyone. How horrible would that have been? It was bad enough this way.
“Are you at all concerned, as Trump said, that we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself?” Haines asked.
