A recent viral TikTok starts with a question: "Did you guys know that COVID has a sound?"

Mae Rice, a travel intensive-care-unit nurse, seated for a rare moment during her overnight shift, stares into the camera before the screen goes black. Then comes the beeping - loud and unremitting. These alarms go off when a vital sign has reached a critical limit, the overlaid text explains.

They can't be silenced for more than 10 seconds, and with the Georgia hospital's ICU at capacity, they'd blare nonstop all night. Most of the 30 patients Rice was caring for at the moment wouldn't survive the next few days, she wrote in the video. All were unvaccinated.

The video, posted under Rice's handle, @nurse_sushi, initially doesn't seem remarkable in the sea of COVID-19 content on TikTok. But days after she posted the video on August 19, her comments were full of people saying the video had motivated them to get vaccinated.

    ...

Sarah Draissi, a 21-year-old hospitality worker in Philadelphia, said she'd put in a lot of effort to learn about COVID-19 online. But by August, she was still unvaccinated.

Though she prided herself on her ability to sort misinformation from fact, the sheer volume of misinformation she'd seen about the COVID-19 vaccine made her wonder whether some of it had to be rooted in truth.

"Healthcare workers on TikTok, usually they're in their house, and they're just getting off a really long shift, and they're really tired," Draissi said. Seeing them outside the hospital wasn't enough to sway her, she said.

Draissi was at her family's home in Florida when she saw Rice's video. Immediately, she made an appointment to get vaccinated upon her return to Philadelphia. "I went on my phone, and I made an appointment for the day my flight landed," she said.

"What really stuck with me is when she said, 'There's nothing that we can do for these people,'" Draissi said. "It just made me feel dumb, to be very honest. Because there is something that I can do while I'm healthy and not in an ICU bed."

Shae Garbe, a 23-year-old from Wisconsin, procrastinated getting a vaccine before seeing the video in bed one morning. "It's easy to ignore something when it isn't right in front of your face, but that video was so immersive," Garbe said.

When she saw that Rice's patients were all unvaccinated, she froze. "I watched it a few times on repeat, and then I grabbed my keys. I got vaccinated a half-hour later," Garbe said.

Both Draissi and Garbe have since shared the video with friends and family.

Rice said she was contacted by the California Department of Health about a week after posting the video. She's agreed to let it run her TikTok as a statewide public service announcement in October and November.

"I hear it when I get off work. I hear it while I'm driving. I hear it while I'm showering. I hear it while I'm laying down to go to sleep," Rice said of the telemetry alarm. Last month, she replaced her coffee maker because it reminded her of the alarm's sound.

So boosters starting this month still? WHO says, no because they want more vax for poor countries.

I'm coming up on six months, so I'm guessing Nov/Dec for my booster.

Yah, was under the same assumption that WHO would say no to boosters because they want more wide-spread vaccination to prevent any more variants/more deaths (which does make sense taking a long-term perspective). However, rich countries value their intellectual property and economy, so of course we can't share the science to allow more manufacturers to replicate the highly effective vaccines that we have and rich countries are totally want boosters for their population to keep those economies chugging along.

However, I just was reading some YouTube comments and folks are in total meltdown over the "mandate" in the US to push for more vaccination through in employment.

I can't filter out the Russian trolls from the braindead anti-vaxxers, but the comments are a who's who of misinformation.

The strawmen are coming fast and furious too, but I guess when you're the "greatest country in the world" and your education system fails so totally the people can't critically think, understand science, and get their marching orders on how to live from the media (i.e., that part of the media that calls out "the media" but is itself part of the media), it's no wonder the folks think that doctors and scientists are lying to them about the vaccine (that is until they can't breath and their self-centered asses show up in an ER in full "save me, save me before anyone else" mode).

I only hope that when and if booster time comes I can at least try to opt to get the same flavor.

I'm sure these new rules are gonna cause a stir in my office. For the most part I think the vast majority ended up getting the jab, but the last holdouts are probably gonna be something.

I'm double Pfizered; however, Moderna is showing better efficacy against the widespread Delta variant. Moderna is also providing better protection from severe illness and death.

The mRNA vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech may be less effective than Moderna's against the Delta variant of the coronavirus, according to two reports posted on medRxiv on Sunday ahead of peer review. In a study of more than 50,000 patients in the Mayo Clinic Health System, researchers found the effectiveness of Moderna's vaccine against infection had dropped to 76% in July - when the Delta variant was predominant - from 86% in early 2021. Over the same period, the effectiveness of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine had fallen to 42% from 76%, researchers said. While both vaccines remain effective at preventing COVID hospitalization, a Moderna booster shot may be necessary soon for anyone who got the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines earlier this year, said Dr. Venky Soundararajan of Massachusetts data analytics company nference, who led the Mayo study.
At this point I'd go with a Moderna booster, given a choice.

First boosters will only be Pfhizer. Saw an article earlier this week, that Moderna went with a 100 particle per dose (or something like that) for each dose, where Pfhizer chose to go with 30 each dose to lower risks of side effects. This would explain why Moderna has held up better in the long run. They may very well need boosters much less freaquently.

Basically that first Moderna shot delivered more mRNA than both Pfizer shots combined did.

                Well **** me.

Although, my Pfizer held up pretty well after being exposed to my brother for a couple days this past week after he got the 'VID from a wedding. His J&J shot on the other hand... not so much.

                  Here it is.

The study said that Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has a higher level of the active ingredient that creates antibodies — 100 micrograms compared to 30 micrograms in Pfizer.

Both mRNA vaccines were roughly equivalent in efficacy against the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. Delta has changed things for the worse, with Moderna significantly outperforming Pfizer. Went to my old hometown a month ago and got a friend of mine to get her first shot and took her daughter for her second. I recommended she get Moderna after looking at recent studies showing it provided 96% protection from severe illness and death against Delta after only one dose, while Pfizer was significantly less. Frankly, I feel that she hasn't been taking COVID seriously enough and did what I could to keep her from getting seriously ill. She's not an antivaxxer, just didn't bother to get it due to various circumstances.

When my brother tested positive after having symptoms I referred to it in our group chat with a couple of our friends as the "Dollar Tree Vaccine". Our one buddy, who knows I'm a Jets fan, coined the "New York Jets Vaccine" phrase and I was forced to acknowledge how accurate that statement was, and can't stop calling it that

From the recent Ontario study: https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...420v1.full.pdf

Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization or death caused by all studied VOCs was
generally higher than for symptomatic infection after partial vaccination with all three vaccines
(Table 3). In particular, against Delta, vaccine effectiveness against severe outcomes after 1 dose
                            of BNT162b2, mRNA-1273, and ChAdOx1 was 78% (95% CI, 65–86%), 96% (95% CI, 72–
                            99%), and 88% (95% CI, 60–96%), respectively.
So, this shows that, after only one dose, Moderna provided 96% efficacy against hospitalization or death, while Pfizer was 78%, and AstraZeneca was 88% against Delta. So, this suggests that Moderna is the best choice for maximum protection from the first dose.

Yeah, I had Moderna the first time around and that's why I was curious about being able to pick your flavor as I'd like to go with the same yet again.

I feel gutted for my Mom and her other, now 5 living siblings. All 7 were a close group and this is the first time they lost one of their own.

Now the family looks at my other Aunt in Florida, who is some Vegan ultra-religious something or other, who also still hasn't gotten the vaccine. The Dragon Fire she's gonna get from her other siblings will melt the Sun.

                                                  My condolences for your loss.

I just feel bad for my cousin George who got his Mom sick. I think he's beating himself up real hard.

He's a good guy who took care of his Mom. It was reckless in what he did, but he's the one out of his four siblings that was taking care of her.

Besides now, it doesn't matter. All that does matter is his brothers and sister coming together and living their life. That's what their mother would have wanted.

So if there is still animosity they need to bury it and move on.

The thing with kids though, is that if the kid is quarantined, a, or both parents have to be. So the rate of exposure is much higher than just if the kid was left alone.

                                                                              Details:

-Routine COVID safety checks to minimize disruption to learning by helping us catch potential spread of the virus before it starts.

-If a safety check test is positive, the students in the group will take individual tests to determine which student(s) in the group produced the positive test//the lab will automatically process each individual sample to determine which student(s) in the group produced the positive test.

-Test and stay allows students who have had close contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19 while at school to stay in school if the student is not showing symptoms.

-Instead of needing to quarantine and miss school, these students will take a daily rapid test while they remain in school as long as they are not symptomatic.

-Students participate for at least five days after they may have been exposed.

                                                                              Comment

Why, because they had so many kids at home quarantined, because they have so many cases.

I've heard some epidemiologists suggest that we're at a point where everyone is expected to get delta, and there's really no point in trying to stop it. The only issue is managing hospital loads. So that might explain the changes in policies... last year we were hoping to avoid people getting sick at all, and now we just want to make sure everyone doesn't get sick at the same time. It really is a very different situation, and calls for different strategies.

They've done nothing except bring back mask mandates and the cases continue to trend upwards and our health care system is getting overwhelmed.

Im tired of it and im just thinking lets just all get Covid and whomever dies...they die.
