We're seeing cases of community spread in Washington, California, NY, to name a few.

It's here, and it's just a matter of days before the numbers start to climb into small outbreak clusters.

Just like Italy and the rest of Europe. What happens there, will happen here.

Primary doctors are refusing to see patience with syntoms and cancelling appointments in my home town.

I understand their reasoning to a point, but by doing so may cause emergency solutions (urgent care, ER, etc) to get overloaded, possibly making the situation worse.

Comparing the coronavirus to the flu is like comparing smallpox to the flu.

Besides, the media is just the messenger, the people reaction and how they deal with the information is on them, not the media. It's like someone telling you your house is on fire, you can either panic, or calmly decide the best action to take. At least that is how I look at it.

Depends where you go for your news. Some sites have 1 or 2 stories stating all the facts in a couple paragraphs. Other sites like Yahoo will have 40 stories with headlines that usually include. NUMBER OF DEATHS DOUBLED IN WASHINGTON when two elderly people died who had other health problems to begin with. Bringing the total deaths from 2 to 4.

Makes me think these people put money into the stock market for bottled water and canned foods, facemasks, ect. Then they create a panic and profiteer off of it and then sell those stocks and stop reporting on it. If it hurts the economy or causes peoples retirement funds to disappear they don't care. If medical staff runs out of supplies, oh well. The political aspect is even more worrisome but I won't discuss it here.

A potentially missed opportunity.

Dr. Peter Hotez says he made the pitch to anyone who would listen. After years of research, his team of scientists in Texas had helped develop a vaccine to protect against a deadly strain of coronavirus. Now they needed money to begin testing it in humans.

But this was 2016. More than a decade had passed since the viral disease known as severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, had spread through China, killing more than 770 people. That disease, an earlier coronavirus similar to the one now sweeping the globe, was a distant memory by the time Hotez and his team sought funding to test whether their vaccine would work in humans.

"We tried like heck to see if we could get investors or grants to move this into the clinic," said Hotez, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children's Hospital and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. "But we just could not generate much interest."

That was a big missed opportunity, according to Hotez and other vaccine scientists, who argue that SARS, and the Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, of 2012, should have triggered major federal and global investments to develop vaccines in anticipation of future epidemics.

Instead, the SARS vaccine that Hotez's team created in collaboration with scientists at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is sitting in a freezer, no closer to commercial production than it was four years ago.

"We could have had this ready to go and been testing the vaccine's efficacy at the start of this new outbreak in China," said Hotez, who believes the vaccine could provide cross-protection against the new coronavirus, which causes a respiratory disease known as COVID-19. "There is a problem with the ecosystem in vaccine development, and we've got to fix this."

Very interesting research coming out of China's Peking University's School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai. The virus has mutated into two prevalent strains, one more transmissible and lethal than the other.

But so far I got two conflicting reports on which one hit first in Hubei. According to Dr. Campbell, it was the L Variant (more lethal) that hit first in China, with the Telegraph saying the opposite.

What is fascinating is that a person can contract both, but we have no indication of whether that makes it worse for a person or not. Really interesting stuff in today's update from Dr. Campbell.

If the President makes it sound like going to work with symptoms is fine, and even 1 out of 100 people listen to him and do so, this could have serious and drastic consequences.

I think people are thinking that they're delaying events by weeks or months, but I don't see what's going to improve in that time. From what I've heard, it will be years before we have a vaccine... should we cancel all large group events for that time? Or shall we just go ahead with our normal lives, knowing that many people who are old or weak will die? I just don't understand the plan.

Delaying makes sense. Warmer weather has a tendency to help reduce or prevent the spread of stuff like this. Which is why the winter is considered Flu & Cold season. Sure you get some of that in the summer as well but it doesn't usually survive as long in warmer weather.

But that is for the FLU virus, we have no idea if the same thing will happen with COVID-19. It may weaken, it may stay the same, or it may get stronger. We just don't know (but we're about to find out).

That's how it works with most viruses though. It has to due with the body's immunity response rather than the virus itself. Human immune systems are weaker in colder months. This why the "Old Wive's Tale" of catching a cold from cold weather is so prevalent.

Also it's because the rise in humidity makes the air particles heavier and thus, in theory, makes it harder for viruses to travel (at least airborne). That and during the winter months people are more likely to spend time indoors instead of outdoors and can thus more easily spread infections around. Since we've had a pretty warm winter down here, this could explain why almost nobody had the sniffles and this could be the first year I go without getting at least one cold.

And again, we still don't know about this virus. Not all viruses are affected by weather. Now that said, coronaviruses tend to be affected by cold and warm weather historically so we can HOPE it will stop or at least slow this virus down when it gets hot outside. Then maybe people can stop being stupid about it and we can all get back to normal (now toilet paper shortages are occurring).

The CDC who as of march 1st had only done something like 450 tests in the entire USA?

Who then hide the number of tests done on their site probably because it makes the Trump administration look bad?

BC in Canada which had done more tests then all of the states combined up to that point and only has a population of roughly 5 million?

It's not the media going nuts it's all the major health institutions around the world and medical experts, they are all ringing alarm bells.

It's common sense to delay events with lots of people gathering. It could drop away in a few weeks or it could just drag on for months.

Italy is fairing worse than I expected (41 deaths and 769 more cases in 24 hrs). China's authoritarian lockdown looks to be extremely effective with barely any new cases on a daily basis (only 143).

I think US and other countries just starting with this need to just lock everything down right now. Copy china. Close highways and bus lanes. Shut down schools and universities. 3 weeks of locking things down is going to save lives and in 6 weeks it might be gone.
