In staff meeting this morning, one of my employees tearfully told us that two of her friends, husband and wife, contracted covid recently. Sadly, the husband died within a week. 50-something, no underlying as far as they know. Both, unvaccinated.

What troubled me most, honestly, as that my employee is also unvaccinated, with no plans to do so. I simply cannot get my mind around this.

Similarly, with the new vaccine mandate for teachers in place here in Oregon, two of my wife's fellow teachers, both of whom teach kids in the cannot vaccinate <12yrs old range, have stated that they will quit teaching if they're not able to get a religious exemption. Even though their anti-vax has zero to do with religion (my assessment, based on hearing their conspiracy theories).

I don't envy you your position there Lupine. Condolences to your employees deceased friend.

I don't understand the rationale behind most anti-vax arguments either, but it just makes each death more tragic, because it just didn't have to happen.

None of us can. My wife is looking for new nurses right now because two of the ones she has don't want to take the vaccine. They take care of immunocompromised kiddos at her office and can't have a nurse spreading this crap around. They are simply looking to replace them now.

So what you're saying is you actually aren't guaranteed to get it if you are exposed no matter what and there is actually a level of prevention (yes, even not 100% but why roll those dice?)

This is also why breakthrough needs to be studied. What if some of those were something like incorrect dosage?

It's a common misconception among the ignorant that all anti-vaxxers are religious. Many are not, as you found out yourself. Anti-vaxxers are a special kind of nut.

As for your co-workers, well they had opportunities to get the vaccine and didn't so what more is to be said? They made their choice, as sad as it is.

Good luck, there is a nationwide nurse shortage.

I'm almost convinced this whole issue as we know it exists because of bots. I was reading the comment section of a site that shall not be named and an interesting thing I saw kept being repeated was "major pharma"

                    Merck is major pharma..

COVID hospitalization averages $20K—and insurers want unvaccinated to pay up
They referenced Peterson Center on Healthcare and Kaiser Family Foundation for the figures. Delta (the airline) is going to charge antivaxxers $200 a month surcharge to stay on their health plan Nov 1.

Wow, I think this is the first time I've cheered on a ... health insurance co.

We'll probably see some lawsuits, but the writing is definitely on the wall. I think we'll really see vaccination rates jump once state provided insurances jump on the bandwagon.

Shameful that money will be the driver for many, rather than caring about the wellbeing of a neighbor.

What's their argument going to be? I can't sue you over tobacco premiums but **** non addictive preventative ones? I'd laugh them out of the court, have the lawyer disbarred and everyone committed

My oldest kiddo is Covid positive at college. Turns out one of the people in the OU band tested positive in his section and now he has a positive test as well. Kiddo was vaccinated and he said all he had was a scratchy throat this morning. So he has been in his dorm room all day. He is set to quarantine in his room until Sept 3rd. Apparently like 3/4 of the mellophones are in quarantine. So...

Insurance companies are middle men, always have been, and with ACA its legally bound. They calculate likelihood of $X payouts per year and divide that by number of customers to figure the cost-per-customer and tack on their premium to cover costs of running the business and a certain amount of profit. In the case of ACA, that premium is defined by law.

Cost of medical care goes up, does that mean their profit goes down? Hell no. It means the insurance costs of everyone increase. When ACA added a ton of "uninsurable" people to the pool, expected medical payouts increased, so everyone's insurance costs increase. Similarly, each unvaccinated person getting treated at $20k-$50k is costing ALL OF US a huge amount of money. If you're dealing with a small number of expensive cases, it's a blip in the big picture. Covid ain't no blip.

So, yes... anything the insurance companies can do to pressure people into cutting the country's medical bills with an INCREASE in quality of health care is a good thing for everyone.

If some insurance company decides not to follow suit and all of the unvaccinated move to those plans, either they'll be outrageously expensive (and the vaccinated will leave that plan) or the company will simply go out of business due to the unsustainable payouts.

Kind of a ridiculous photo if you ask me. Not only is it 6 years old, but no **** someone who is in the hospital for months is going to lose a ton of weight, let alone a man near 60 who obviously went from, at the very least, therapeutic TRT to nothing. Stopping that alone would make him lose a ton of weight. I think everyone knows by now it doesn't matter how fit you are.

I didn't say it did. I said he was bedridden for two months and off whatever TRT dosage he was on (if that's all he was on),
and that alone will make him lose a ton of weight, probably mostly lean mass. Saying he is a fitness guru is enough, no need putting a 6 year old before photo up against a post hospital stay and saying "look what COVID does!" Like I said, it doesn't matter how fit you are for any sickness, I think we all get it.

                                                                      Abstract
Background Reports of waning vaccine-induced immunity against COVID-19 have begun to surface. With that, the comparable long-term protection conferred by previous infection with SARS-CoV-2 remains unclear.

Methods We conducted a retrospective observational study comparing three groups: (1)SARS-CoV-2-naïve individuals who received a two-dose regimen of the BioNTech/Pfizer mRNA BNT162b2 vaccine, (2)previously infected individuals who have not been vaccinated, and (3)previously infected and single dose vaccinated individuals. Three multivariate logistic regression models were applied. In all models we evaluated four outcomes: SARS-CoV-2 infection, symptomatic disease, COVID-19-related hospitalization and death. The follow-up period of June 1 to August 14, 2021, when the Delta variant was dominant in Israel.

Results SARS-CoV-2-naïve vaccinees had a 13.06-fold (95% CI, 8.08 to 21.11) increased risk for breakthrough infection with the Delta variant compared to those previously infected, when the first event (infection or vaccination) occurred during January and February of 2021. The increased risk was significant (P<0.001) for symptomatic disease as well. When allowing the infection to occur at any time before vaccination (from March 2020 to February 2021), evidence of waning natural immunity was demonstrated, though SARS-CoV-2 naïve vaccinees had a 5.96-fold (95% CI, 4.85 to 7.33) increased risk for breakthrough infection and a 7.13-fold (95% CI, 5.51 to 9.21) increased risk for symptomatic disease. SARS-CoV-2-naïve vaccinees were also at a greater risk for COVID-19-related-hospitalizations compared to those that were previously infected.

Conclusions This study demonstrated that natural immunity confers longer lasting and stronger protection against infection, symptomatic disease and hospitalization caused by the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, compared to the BNT162b2 two-dose vaccine-induced immunity. Individuals who were both previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 and given a single dose of the vaccine gained additional protection against the Delta variant.

My mom and I, told her to get it last time we visited ,but oh well, her and her kids think covid is just the flu and only old people die, some people just don't want to listen. I feel like asking them what they think now but not going to bother.

You have to be a special kind of ignorant to not be able to comprehend "flu" is short for influenza and not a generic term for being sick thus having to explain influenza vs coronaviruses. Also, what is vitamin c doing to do to help fight a virus your body hasn't seen before?
