Is that 5-10% a matter of viral load or personal immunity? They don't know. if you're one of those unlucky few then you can catch it. You may or may not spread it if you do.
So that 10% is for front line workers that are highly likely to be exposed. So what happens in our current environment with social distancing, masks, etc?

Among more than 75 million fully vaccinated people in the US, just around 5,800 people reported a “breakthrough” infection, in which they became infected with the pandemic coronavirus despite being fully vaccinated.

The numbers suggest that breakthroughs occur at the teeny rate of less than 0.008 percent of fully vaccinated people—and that over 99.992 percent of those vaccinated have not contracted a SARS-CoV-2 infection.

      ...

Vaccines can fail in some people because of a variety of factors, including immune status, health status, age, and medications they're on. There’s also the possibility that something went wrong with the vaccines themselves, such as improper storage, delivery, or composition, Fauci explained.

      ...

In the CDC’s data on breakthrough COVID-19 infections, the agency found that 29 percent of the infections were asymptomatic. Only seven percent of the 5,800 breakthrough cases resulted in hospitalization and there were only 74 deaths. That suggests the death rate among breakthrough cases is around one percent and, among all fully vaccinated people, around 0.0001 percent.

So, great supporting statistics for opening up.... 74 deaths out of 75 million people (1%) and .0008% for hospitalization.

Now, this is the same number (.0008%) as they gave for "breakthrough infection" so they're not counting minor coughs, etc, in that number as opposed to the mandatory PCR testing numbers which would find more regardless.

Numbers will go up once the masks and distancing go away, obviously, but they've got a long way to rise before being notable.

If that's the case then there is literally no reason to keep doing the mask mandates ..

Note that the crazy-good numbers are measured with the mask mandates and reduced capacity, etc. Will go up once the mandates go away. Not that I'm against that, just-sayin.

I don't think they'd go up enough to justify continuing the mandates and damage to the economy. Interesting data though, as always.

Will they go up that much though or at all? So far mandate went away in Texas over a month ago and their numbers have been dropping.

Pfizer CEO states a booster shot after a year, possibly every year after will likely be needed.

The head of the pharmaceutical company said that fully vaccinated people will likely need another jab within 12 months, with potential annual follow-up shots...

I would very much like to get rid of the mask after I'm fully vaccinated within the next 2 weeks but I don't believe that's going to happen any time soon. And the fact that I live in the epicenter of the current surge in the US!

At the very minimum keep the masks up until everyone that wants a vaccine gets one? This is still not optimal but hey this is the USA.

I doubt we'll reach herd immunity country wide. Too many won't get it for "reasons". So booster shots for the foreseeable future though those may no longer be "free". Hopefully they can mix it into the flu shot so we don't have to make an extra visit and maybe deal with a co-pay on top (my insurance only covers flu shot for free if I go to my PCP, get it at any pharmacy and it's like $45 or something).

I honestly don't understand the hesitation to masks. I have worn one in the Florida heat for over a year now and there are times when I forget that it is there. Did I buy a few types that were annoying, sure, but others are nearly invisible.

The numbers sound great but there is still a huge wall of people who state they will under no circumstance get vaccinated.

Rough estimate is around 40% of people are hesitant, with a 30 to 35% as a definite no. That comes out to be about 75 million adults over the age of 18 in this country. That is 75 million hosts to allow the virus to mutate, especially if we open everything 100% and do away with masks. That is 75 million chances for those of us who are vaccinated to be at the mercy of effectiveness against other strains and variants. Think of me as chicken little, think of me as a pussy, I honestly don't care, but we have to be forward thinking and not just want to declare victory before the fight is over.

We have extended the length of this pandemic by the notion that these mandates are not needed, and we let that genie out of the bottle through the last administration and his followers reluctance because of "the economy." We have distinct examples of life going on as normal in other places right now because they put in the work and suffered last year for a small amount of time, while we straddled both lines doing nothing exceptionally well. By lengthening the pandemic, it is a deep cut vs a thousand cuts...

So, your solution? Masks and distance until all of the No people die of old age? Sending the cops in to vaccinate people against their will? House arrest for the No for the indefinite future? Firing squad?

None are viable. At some point you have to acknowledge that "This is as good as it's going to get."

As far as I can see, the only viable approach is to declare an end, watch No people start filling the hospitals/dying, and then watch others finally say "maybe I was wrong" and clamor to get vaccinated.

They'll either get a vaccine, develop some immunity the old-fashioned way by getting ill, or die. Either way, we're progressing towards the herd immunity level.

And in a world of 8 billion people, where international travel happens, those 75 million are a drop in the bucket. Mutations are going to happen... there's nothing to be done about it. The hope is that the immunity you have takes the edge off the severity of any other strains.

And you're asking those of us that got vaccinated to be held hostage indefinitely. The whole point of the vaccination is to be done with this. If it changes NOTHING prepare to see people ignore mask/distancing rules anyway. There's a social contract at work, do X and we can get to Y. If Y never comes, people are going to get very pissed off... might even start seeing riots. The difference is this time it's going to be by the people that TRIED to the right thing and feel betrayed, rather than nut jobs.

They will delay herd immunity for all of us.
They will reap the benefits from us who got vaccinated and believe in science.
When things go back to normal, they will thump their chests and say there was no need to vaccinate to begin with.

It's never going to go away. COVID seems like it will be a virus that we have a yearly vaccine for like the Flu. It's not the first time humanity has seen a new virus become generational, and it won't be the last.

I'm done with the doomsday crap. We're well past that.

I get my first shot tomorrow. This **** will be with us for a very long time. It's world wide, and poor nations can't vaccinate fast enough to stop mutations.

You can't stop mutations because its nature. It's only a matter of time before more contagious viruses will surface because people travel. Yea, blame China for everyone's inadequate pandemic protocol.

Yeah, a lot of my employees are garbage, so there's a benefit to that.

We are a very small business, so maybe not comparable to your situation, but one thing I have learned is that sometimes sticking with a problem/borderline employee in the long run is not the best option. It may save time/effort in the short term, but in the long run you wish you'd just replace them sooner, rather than sink too many resources into them.

Second vaccine ended up hitting me pretty hard. I'd say starting around 18 hours post vaccination I had chills and low grade headache, and that continued to feeling fatigued, slightly nauseous and just generally uncomfortable (like you do when you have a flu or bad cold), then later on I felt kind of feverish. I ended up just resting in the bathtub for like 3 hours, and then after that still going to bed early.

I'd put it on the level of a very minor flu, or very bad cold. I feel pretty much back to normal today. (With that being said, I have other health issues so normal to me is actually feeling a little bit crappy ).

I'll be getting my first jab tomorrow (I guess there is a benefit to being in food production). It's supposed to be the Moderna vaccine, but I'll take what I can get.

They are now saying people wanting the vaccine is already slowing. Not surprising from what I read from facebook friends and their beliefs that its killing people and what not. I say if it slows to a trickle I should be able to be rid of my mask, since shot 2 is tomorrow for me. If they dont want to get the vaccine then so be it. take your chances. Also dont be funding them with money if they do get it after a certain point if they decided they didn't want the shot.

Read the demand is slowing down today so I checked if I could get it at the two closest shot locations....no joy. I'll check again next month.

I just don't want to play the schedule wars or stand around waiting for 4 hours to get my shot. When I can schedule to get one within 30 minutes of my arriving, then I'll do it.
