Our kids' school is experiencing a post spring break covid outbreak. Small private boarding academy with 20+ kids testing positive so far. That's about 10% of the student body. They've closed the school and sent the kids home in an effort to stop the surge. While I understand they don't have the facilities to deal with a major outbreak like this, my personal feeling is that this is compounding the problem, as you've now sent 200+ possibly infected kids back to their homes and communities. This isn't good, and I expect it to worsen significantly over the coming days/weeks.

My son was frustrated that we were staying home over spring break, while he had a ton of classmates heading to Hawaii, Costa Rica, etc due to low airfares. And so this is where we are.

I get my Pfizer shot Wednesday.

Yep, Honestly I'm seeing it as worse then it was in the beginning as many at work are out with it. Dose 2 in a week and a half cant come soon enough.

I did a quick round with my employees. So far the exceptions are one still in wait / see mode but not opposed to vaccination, and one employee a flat will not get vaccinated. So now I get to decide if I make this a requirement to work here.

Not sure it matters a whole lot? Their choice if they want to go down that road, while all others that are smart about it are pretty well protected at 95 percent.

I don't know why you'd make it a requirement just because this person doesn't want the vaccine. I'm sure you don't have a requirement to get the flu vaccine..

I guess you'd have to weigh whether or not the one person is a good worker or not. If he's simply replaceable and you're fine with limiting the talent pool you can pull from after you get rid of him, then hey go for it. If he's not easily replaceable, then you have to ask is it worth going that route?

can the one who's against vaccination maybe work from home? So he won't infect others?

I still haven't seen anything conclusive that says getting the vaccine has an effect on being a carrier, though?

We're a small team. Nobody is irreplaceable, but it would have a profound effect, at least in the short term.

Going to start with developing an incentive program. Get vaccinated, get a couple days paid leave or something. I was out 30 days when I went down with covid. Fortunately I had lots of sick time banked from the previous year. Not everyone has that luxury. And that's a ton of lost productivity. My viewpoint, unless something has changed, is that if you're not getting vaccinated, eventually you will catch covid.

Yes. Not sure the numbers but symptomatic cases present. Including my kid's best friend's roommate, whom they were both around a lot over the weekend.

My son had covid symptoms after Thanksgiving (loss of smell), when my wife and I got quite ill. We'll see if that offers him some protection.

lol, work started having me travel already. At least our travel is using our own trucks, so most I gotta worry about is hotel and food, work outside so that's not a big deal. Could definitely be worse. Opened up to all 16+ this Monday and was able to schedule an appointment, but have to wait two weeks. Could do it next week, but they have me out of town. Oh boy!

Yeah, it's just kinda weird being back on the road. I'm staying in a more "tourist" seasonal area and ahead of the real open season, but more stuff than normal seems to be closed at the moment. Just an odd feeling all around as these are areas I've worked in for over a decade now. We weren't allowed any overnight travel at all last field season and were only able to work on stuff out of the field station. Just gotta get back into the modified swing of things.

Getting my first test tomorrow after getting sinusitis over what is likely seasonal allergies.

They arent taking any chances even with people who have long been vaccinated. Reason being there are 4 people in icu locally with the british variant who already had their first shot.

But it takes up to 2 weeks for immunity to build up so they may have been infected shortly before or after their first vaccine shot. In my case Ive been fully vaccinated since Feb but I guess you never know.

I'll be fully vaccinated soon. So, not interested in coming into office with a bunch of anti-vaxxers. My company is mulling the same thing. I told them I'll work from home until country achieves herd immunity if workplace contains unvaccinated people. This has been too much of a major sacrifice to compromise now for stupid/selfish people. Fully vaccinated people are not 100% protected. The newer variants will just get more and more resilient as more people get vaccinated. So the odds of unvaccinated people getting sick is going to go up. And, the time it takes to achieve herd immunity is only going to draw out longer and longer. So, no.

The PM extended the lockdown for another week, so kids are staying home (I work in a school board so I'm working from home too however I can't do anything remotely - I'm basically paid to stay home). Can't go out past 8 PM, non-essential shops are closed.

My dad gets his vaccine on the 14th IIRC, step-parents around the 12th. Can't wait to get mine.

I got Moderna and last shot was back in early Feb so I should be good. I suppose theres that 5% chance I can get infected with symptoms but if this was covid itd be pretty mild symptoms so vaccine would be working fine.

I'm pretty sure that I am going to make it a requirement in my small company. There is no legitimate reason to be concerned about getting the vaccine, so refusing to do so is basically saying that you're not willing to do your part to help end the pandemic. As far as I'm concerned if someone wants to reveal themselves to be a self centered idiot, then we can find someone else to replace them. They are welcome to make their choice and find another job.

They also mentioned that asymptomatic infection was 10%... so 10% of 10% infection rate is 1%, if I understand what they're getting at. So, if you're not feeling under the weather only 1% of being an asymptomatic carrier?

To carry the math forward... if you're hanging out with other vaccinated people, the chances of THEM being infected via the low-chance asymptomatic carrier is 10% (given enough time/exposure.) 10% of that 1% is 1/10%. Becomes pretty obvious how fast this would kill off spread even if no masks or social distancing rules are in place if everyone gets vaccinated, especially if people are mindful about not carrying on with their lives if they actually have any symptoms.

I got my second shot on Tuesday. Felt a little odd, but wasn't bad... in fact, hard to say for sure it's a symptom vs just an off day. Stomach was a little unsettled that evening at bedtime and had a very minor headache the following day (minor enough I didn't take anything for it.) Pfizer.

The vaccination center at the hospital I went to was run extremely well. I was really afraid that appointments would be impossible to get. But, it only took a few tries and now I have both shots! The second was definitely a little more in the way of side effects. Felt like a super low grade fever all day today. But, only slightly annoying. Can’t wait for 2 weeks and I reach full effectiveness. My county really surprised me. Things were very smooth. Given the ****-show that went on for most of the pandemic, I wasn’t expecting much. So happy to be pleasantly surprised!

The official Russian coronavirus death toll of 102,649 as of Saturday — reported on state television and to the World Health Organization — is far lower, when adjusted for the population, than that of United States and most of Western Europe.

However, a far different story is told by the official statistics agency Rosstat, which tallies deaths from all causes. Russia saw a jump of 360,000 deaths above normal from last April through December, according to a Times analysis of historical data. Rosstat figures for January and February of this year show that the number is now well above 400,000.

In the United States, with more than twice the population of Russia, such “excess deaths” since the start of the pandemic have numbered about 574,000. By that measure, which many demographers see as the most accurate way to assess the virus’s overall toll, the pandemic killed about one in every 400 people in Russia, compared with one in every 600 in the United States.
