First confirmed case in my city. I guess I'll die now.
Officially it has been in my girlfriend's city in IL for many weeks and un-officially in my town for about as long. They do not count persons under the age of 18 in the official infected count as that is a violation of some such. And I am still alive. I must be immortal baby!!

Biden noted in his reply that the COVID-19 cure “will make the problem worse, no matter what.”
Pretty much. I still firmly believe this is a lot of panic over something that isn't very frightening to begin with. It's only spread in poor countries or those with terrible healthcare. The U.S. could have it but most people will just hit up a hospital and they'll be fine.
IMO, it's only dangerous for the elderly and/or those who do not take care of themselves.

Wow, that definitely puts them at risk. Here's hoping that they stay healthy.

80% of deaths are elderly, frail, in some way immuno suppressed which could include an underdeveloped immune system that some who were born and lived in cities are known to have. Some people who also avoided vaccines their entire lives.
We dont know the medical background of those who are neither too young or too old in the ~6 years old to 65 year olds who were killed by this virus.

Iran is in bad shape and they're faking the numbers in some attempt to make the situation look better. The vice president has it now too.
Russia has stopped some flights to and from Iran, but it's too late and they're not shutting them all. Russia will probably be next but Putin will fake the numbers too and so all these side countries will have outbreaks we won't get a good understanding about. Italy and South Korea will provide us with actual data worth using.

How does one person from a **** country, especially the one with some of the worst healthcare and some of the dirtiest people I've ever seen, counter my point?
Iran is absolutely fudging numbers and they've also done a piss-poor job at taking care of those who get sick. They can't manage to identify between military and civilian aircraft... Is anyone surprised?

Iran is pretty progressive modernized nation. It's not a **** country, as you're saying. And a soccer player sounds like a healthy young person with a decent cardio and respiratory system. If this killed her, that's not a good sign.
n 2016,*Bloomberg News*ranked Iran 30th most efficient healthcare system ahead of United States and Brazil.

We got notice from our boss today that we need to make sure we have everything we need to work from home. There's been nothing official yet, and I'm sure it's just CYA. But...he made the point of reminding us to be prepared. We'll see what happens.

The stocking up on food, water and supplies I get, its the masks I dont understand. Scientists have said over and over - wearing the mask is not going to protect you from people that are sick. The masks are for those that are already sick.
It's just more of the same "America sucks" mentality. Iran having better healthcare than the US is an extremely questionable statement
Have to agree. I can only take away from what I've read, and that is that Iran has a higher coverage rate than we do, and that they've made more progress within their own country as far as providing medical programs and education to the people, but that's not the same as "better" imo.
We just have a higher % not covered for a variety of reasons.

American Exceptionalism aside, you said Iran is a country with the worst healthcare and ... "dirtiest people" which strikes me as a really questionable statement.
What did you mean by Iranians are "dirty people" exactly?

I'm working on a massive project that's going live on May 1, and my key database developer is currently living in Italy, 30 miles away from a quarantined area. We had planned to fly him out here in March to help with the final prep for go-live, but now we're not sure he'll be able to leave. Or if he does, that he'll be able to return home anytime soon.

At my company I'm a Product Manager at a company just outside of NYC. Yesterday I pulled together a meeting with my engineering team senior management. My job is one that could handle a work-from-home environment pretty well. I just wanted to get Engineering to set aside some time this week to at least look at what they'd need to do to still perform in their job functions effectively while working from home.
The senior person in the room is frustrating to work with. Avoids accountability for anything, always has excuses not solutions, etc. Our meeting was quick, this person asked if HR directed engineers working on my projects to start working from home. I explained "No, but I'm not asking anyone to work from home. I'm asking us to look at our platforms and see if we could, and if not, what would we need to do now to make that possible?"
We went back n' forth, this person and I, for about 10 minutes. Apparently, without HR authorizing the engineering teams to even examine the issue, they're unwilling to do anything at all. Period.

That's bizarre. We're a small podunk flood insurance IT house owned by a multi-national corporation. We're pretty autonomous and can set our own rules for the most part. Because we live in an area with volatile weather, we're all pretty much capable of working from home at any given time. HR plays no part in that decision. Provided people are still productive and make their deliverables on time, nobody cares if your butt is in the office chair or on a sofa at home.

Honestly I think it was this one person more so than a reflection on the rest of Engineering or even my company as a whole. This person has always been a roadblock. I do think a several week long WFH scenario is probably likely, given our proximity to NYC, and it's something we can probably handle pretty easily given our job.

Sounds like Shrike is dealing with a senior director or something...has to insert themselves where absolutely not needed....which is how my company operates.

It's so sad it's laughable. I'll never understand the corporate mindset. Everything is not the right thing to do unless a director or above thinks of it (Steals a subordinates idea) and then it's just awesome.
So, out of curiosity, it feels like this COVID-19 is now officially showing up everywhere.
When China first reported on it, and it first started showing up, it was already basically all over China. Right now, it seems like testing is shoddy, and it's showing up all over the world, even in people who did not travel to Asia.
Is there a chance that this particular strain of the novel coronavirus was out and about before China noticed and started responding to it?

I don't see why not. I mean CVs aren't anything new. It's plausible that someone brought it to them. Given that a lab is being pinpointed as the "origin" it's not a far reach to think that maybe they're just the first to ID and classify it.
Is there a chance that this particular strain of the novel coronavirus was out and about before China noticed and started responding to it?
It's either this or that it got out when noticed but not yet fully reacted to, you don't see similar spread otherwise. We now know of instances where the incubation period was almost an entire month, so this long period of dormancy and then the similarity of symptoms to other things contribute quite a bit to it being able to escape out of quarantines and such.
The hotspots in Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Japan are still going and all sorts of stuff has been closed globally to lessen the spread, but it seems like China's issue is lessening quickly, so their countermeasures have been largely effective, at least at the point they were strictly implemented.

One of the issues I don't think some people understand is the shock to the supply chain that this will cause and is already causing. It's the sole reason why the markets are tanking.
Someone called me a 'doomer' earlier, which is hilarious because I'm not at all worried about dying from the coronavirus; but in a pandemic there could be up to 30% of a country's working population that either will be unable to work due to illness, or because they are caring for a loved one, or because they can’t get to their place of employment.
This does not mean the world is going to end - I'm a realist not a doomer - but what this does mean is a significant impact to supply chains and infrastructure. And that’s why you need to plan for supply lapses and possible service interruptions like gasoline, propane, common household cleaning supplies, over the shelf medications, food on the shelves, and even cash from an ATM.
I'm preparing for at least 30 days of needed supplies in the face of shortages and supply chain disruptions. Full tank of gas in the car, cash on hand, and basic home amenities just in case supplies dwindle for a month.

MSNBC right now is showing live footage of the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Both are empty.
A department of the City of Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles supports employment for 517,000 people throughout the LA County Region and 1.6 million worldwide. The cargo coming into the port represents approximately 20% of all cargo coming into the United States.[3]
The Port of Long Beach, also known as the Harbor Department of the City of Long Beach, is the second-busiest container port in the United States, after the Port of Los Angeles, which it adjoins.[3] Acting as a major gateway for US–Asian trade, the port occupies 3,200 acres (13 km2) of land with 25 miles (40 km) of waterfront in the city of Long Beach, California. The Port of Long Beach is located less than two miles (3 km) southwest of downtown Long Beach and approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of downtown Los Angeles. The seaport generates approximately US$100 billion in trade and employs more than 316,000 people in Southern California.[4]
