Iranian officials mull restrictions on holy sites

Iran's Hajj Pilgrimage Organization has reportedly cancelled all trips for pilgrims travelling to Iraq in a bid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Al Jazeera's Dorse Jabbari said while reporting from the Iranian capital, Tehran.

She added that Iranian officials have decided to close all of Iran's five land borders with Iraq and are mulling taking action to restrict visits to holy shrines in Qom - where the virus has killed two people - and other nearby places.

With information from China scarce, U.S. spies enlisted to track coronavirus

“China’s behavior causes the intelligence community to get involved,” said one of those sources, a former intelligence official. “Because no data means spying.”

The former official indicated that the most important issue being tracked is the Chinese leadership plans for what is known as “continuity of operations,” meaning the ability for the government to maintain its basic functions during an unprecedented crisis, such as nuclear war or natural disaster.

In China, this might involve senior leaders leaving the country or seeking safety in shelters, “like U.S. doomsday bunkers,” said the source. The intel community, said the source, is seeing some signs Chinese officials are making those kinds of contingency plans, indicating the potential level of concern within Beijing.

US says Russia is behind disinformation campaign
Thousands of Russian-linked social media accounts have launched a coordinated effort to spread alarm about the coronavirus, disrupting global efforts to combat the epidemic, US officials told AFP news agency.

False personas are being used on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to advance Russian talking points and conspiracies, including suggesting that the CIA is behind the virus that has claimed more than 2,300 lives, mostly in China.

"Russia's intent is to sow discord and undermine US institutions and alliances from within, including through covert and coercive malign influence campaigns," said Philip Reeker, the acting assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia.

"By spreading disinformation about coronavirus, Russian malign actors are once again choosing to threaten public safety by distracting the global health response," he said.

Italy rushes to contain Europe’s first major virus outbreak
CODOGNO, Italy (AP) — Italy scrambled Sunday to check the spread of Europe’s first major outbreak of the new viral disease amid rapidly rising numbers of infections and a third death, calling off the popular Venice Carnival, scrapping major league soccer matches in the stricken area and shuttering theaters, including Milan’s legendary La Scala.

Concern was also on the rise in neighboring Austria, which halted all rail traffic to and from Italy for several hours after suspicion that a train at its southern border with Italy had two passengers possibly infected with the virus on board, authorities said. Austria’s interior ministry said it had been informed by Italy’s railway company that two passengers had fever and stopped the train at the Brenner crossing before it could enter Austria.

However, just before midnight Austria’s Federal Railways announced on Twitter the ban had been lifted. Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said the two people suspected of being infected with the virus on the Eurocity 86 train from Venice to Munich had tested negative and the train would be allowed to continue on its way, according to the ORF broadcast network.

The decision to call off Venice Carnival was announced by Veneto regional Gov. Luca Zaia as the number of confirmed virus cases soared to 152, the largest number outside Asia.

More than 50,000 Italians living in 10 communities are literally locked down, facing jail sentences and fines if they leave their homes, thanks to the largest outbreak outside Asia.
On Sunday morning, the regional governor of Lombardy, Attilo Fontana, confirmed that 89 people have now tested positive for the virus and a much larger but unspecified number are referred to as suspect cases.

The second hotspot is in the Veneto region, near Venice, which is celebrating Carnevale to somewhat diminished crowds. Twelve people in the region have tested positive even though none of them has ever been to mainland China or, as far as is known at this point, been in contact with any obvious vectors. Eight Chinese residents, two of whom came back from Wuhan through via Germany, are under quarantine—but they have not tested positive. It is yet unclear if that cluster will grow.

Health officials believe that the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), originated from wild animals sold in the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan City, which is home to 11 million residents.

Now, a team of scientists from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences, South China Agricultural University, and Chinese Institute for Brain Research wrote in a paper published on ChinaXiv, about an alternative source of the coronavirus that is currently spreading across the globe.

The scientists say they have found genomic evidence that the seafood market is not the actual source of the outbreak. Instead, they point the source of the virus outbreak to a laboratory that studies potent viruses.

The Wuhan Virology Institute researches some of the world's most dangerous pathogens. It is China's first Biosafety Level 4 laboratory, the highest security level needed to isolate dangerous biological agents in an enclosed facility.

Surprising outbreak in northern Italy since Friday. What is scary, is that they haven't found patient zero yet. So far 216 confirmed cases with 6 deaths. All of which had underlying health conditions.

With this outbreak and now Iran, nature always seems to find a way to break-out.

No cause for alarm yet for us here in the U.S. but I always like taking a stepped approach for disaster. First to be ready and second not to look like a loon to the wife.

First step, I think it's time for a big bulk shop at Costco. Maybe pick up three bags of charcoal for summer bbq now. Re-stock medicines, etc.

Best to get this stuff now, because ***if*** there is a small outbreak in big cities like NY and LA, the panic that will set in, will have the stores empty in hours.

The panic in this case will be much worse than the disease itself.

There was already a rush on masks, but honestly it's one of the ones that make sense.

For the hard hit places there are restrictions on public gathering, so it may be trickier than normal to get food - but if they actually restrict to that point, they sort of have to give out rations.

If they cared enough they would pump 10-20 billion into a more rapid vaccine development process.

But they arent. Couple items of note recently found out about the virus its incubation period is longer than 14 days which was used for quarantine. one patient tested positive only developed symptoms 27 days later.

And we are pretty sure now that those who are asymptomatic are also contagious.

This guarantees this thing is widespread now.

The guidelines we gave ourselves is the food we buy is what we would normally eat. So if this does peter out, we just keep on moving with our normal diets.

Like 100lb sack of rice, crackers, peanut butter, Gatorade, nuts, canned fruits/ham/veggies, tuna, pasta, pasta sauce, etc. Large garbage bags and tarp.

Since I bbq lots in the summer, I might as well buy three bags of charcoal now, when it's even cheaper.

Here's my rough game plan and decision barriers I'm giving myself. Still trying to figure things out. Just taking it slow and steady.

Step 1 (completed a month ago)
Buy N95 masks. <- New this would sell out regardless.

                                                                  Step 2
Buy two months' worth of food Costco. Buy normal medicines (need to refill anyway).

                                                                  -----------------------------------------------------
Decision Barrier (Small outbreak major U.S. city)
                                                                  -----------------------------------------------------

Buy one or two months' worth of food at Costco.
Start car-gas 1/2 rule. When the tanks get to 1/2, we fill them back up.

                                                                  -------------------------------------------------------

A majority of these cases came from the Diamond Princess cruise liner that was recently quarantined off the coast of Japan after an outbreak on the ship. Of the 53 people, 36 of these cases are credited to the cruise ship.

There are a total of more than 80,410 cases worldwide and an estimated 2,711 deaths from the virus.

The 1918 influenza pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920; colloquially known as Spanish flu) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus, with the second being the swine flu in 2009.[1] It infected 500 million people around the world,[2] or about 27% of the then world population of between 1.8 and 1.9 billion, including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic. The death toll is estimated to have been 40 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest epidemics in human history.[3][4] Historical and epidemiological data are inadequate to identify with certainty the pandemic's geographic origin.[2]

Judging by the 3% fatality rate so far, that many infected globally suggests that we might lose 15,000,000 people before this is done.
