The Chinese government and all of it's service partners must be strained beyond the breaking point right now. They really are being forced to lock down and feed the entire population while taking an economic whopping. Things must be horrible over there. Things were already tense with the previous year of rioting and protests. Add in the overpopulation and unbreathable air. F that.

I was recently in England to go to an academic ceremony. The son of a major Chinese political figure was at this university. The father and I and the sons had dinner, and he told me at the very beginning of this that as far as what china is reporting his own government and he's a senior official. You had to add two zeros two zeros to the numbers they were reporting. I would say now you would have to add at least one zero. This isn't over I don't think it's going to go away. They are reporting under new examination standards but we know that the data we get from china often is not correct. And to hear a senior member of the central committee say that you had to add two zeros back then and one zero now is a pretty serious thing.

Yep some years ago they were working on trying to get a system to give us 2x flu vaccines a year and even 4x. Or every 3 months. But of course as usual we really only pursue these initiatives when the **** hits the fan.
Unfortunately there has yet to be a vaccine for mental diseases like malthusianism. Even education doesnt seem to work.

No offense but that isn't education. That article you linked is pure ignorance and was clearly written by an idealist that understands the world doesn't have infinite resources and can't sustain an infinite amount of people but chooses to avoid the logical conclusion and instead pins an idealistic social idea as the answer to the problem. That article completely ignores nature and the natural order of things. While overpopulation may have been used as a scaremongering tactic in the past that doesn't mean it doesn't exist or pose a serious threat to any confined space. The inability to supply resources to a growing population has killed off many tribes and civilizations.
The truth is that a properly governed nation doesn't have overpopulation because the people there don't need to have 8 kids and hope that 2 of them survive. They live longer lives and the mortality rate is low. The amount of death, disease and suffering is a fraction in comparison to overpopulated areas. Industry and technology can be advanced without damage to the planet when it's used by a responsibly sized population. The air is not acid- smog ect. and resources are not consumed at a rate that exceeds the earth's ability to produce resources.
As you can observe in nature. If a population is given a near infinite amount of resources within a confined space and their fear of death disappears. The behavior sink appears and the population becomes degenerate and eventually goes extinct from the same threats nature poses but now self imposed. (more warped and increased suffering.) An infinite number of people can not be sustained in a limited space regardless of how it's governed. Proper government avoids overpopulation. Being good to one another and singing around a campfire is not going to fix the problem.

All of that fails to take into account the innovations and alternate resources that we avail ourselves.
The article I linked also links to several others you might want to check them out. Every prediction by overpopulation ideologues has failed to materialize. Comparing us to old civilisation that didnt have a path to innovation and were susceptible to simple things like droughts are not valid. Nor are comparisons to animals who simply live off the land:
World population trends were reviewed recently by Darrell Bricker and John Ibbitson in the Observer on January 27th. The authors seriously questioned the UN projection that world population numbers would continue to increase until 2100, quoting several well-respected demographers. Jorgen Randers, a Norwegian academic who decades ago warned of a potential global catastrophe caused by overpopulation, has changed his mind.
“The world population will never reach nine billion people,” he now believes, “It will peak at eight billion in 2040 and then decline.” Similarly, Prof Wolfgang Lutz and his fellow demographers at Vienna’s International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis predict the human population will stabilise by mid-century and then start to go down.

A population will either destroy itself of fix itself. If it doesn't the earth itself will fix the problem. I agree that the population will not surpass 9 billion because it can't sustain it.
I strongly disagree with your outlook on the situation. You can have infinite resources and the problem of overpopulation still remains. There are people who believe humanity is special and they have souls where animals do not. We are animals and we behave like them. That's what reproduction is. If you don't believe that then you are in denial in my opinion.
We already have all the signs of behavioral sink where I live. Increase in gays, lack of gender roles, increase in abortions child abuse and drug abuse. All of it leads to a genetic dead end. The Narcisistic beautiful ones that constantly groom themselves are not incels and yet they are corrupted with STD's and drug abuse. They have zero interest in offspring and are purely hedonistic while living a very posh life. Once it's started it can't be reversed. It's natures way of curing a mistake. China and India are simply next in line.
They will either suffer from a lack of resources or they will stabilize and fix the problem. Stabilizing an overpopulated area will fall to the hedonism that results from overpopulation and will never end well. The only way forward is to fix the problem before the self destructive behavior settles in. It requires forethought from a governing party that can only result from the observation and evolution of previously failed civilizations.

Again I think to compare with past civilizations is fraught with peril we have much more at our disposal today, its really apples and oranges, and as for what you think is cultural decline theres too much to disagree on in this thread. Seems to me the issue today is far more economics than any cultural changes and the causes of such changes is to move away from a repressive culture that often caused more problems than it prevented. Culturally liberal countries dont mass murder their own people or play with their basic demographic structures like old China did.

There are plenty of less developed nations where the population is more healthy and happy. Technology can help but ignoring previous civilizations downfall is the same thing as ignoring your own previous mistakes. Rome fell to the same hedonism. Social behavior is normal but if it's twisted it becomes a problem.
Where I am from there is a large part of the population that is intimidated by or annoyed by society. This is largely because there are way to many people crowded into a small landmass. These people never leave their houses. They observe negative social behavior and become anti social as a result. These people lose the ability to socialize and therefore reproduce or even take care of themselves. They are a liability on their families and society. They still feel natures programming and wish to get off which is why they are addicted to internet porn and hentai video games. I have no moral judgments on these people. They are simply the result of their environment. It results in no reproduction which goes against natures design but the problem is not them. it's their environment.
Anyway, I don't want to get into a heated debate but I felt the need to voice my disagreement.

Kao Lor and his uncle Lee Lor were traveling through the state on their way to pick up a car when they stopped to get a room at a Super 8 Motel in the northern Indiana city of Plymouth.
After entering the hotel Kao Lor says an employee asked if he was Chinese. Lor began recording the encounter. In the video a man who later identified himself as an employee asks Lor if he is Chinese, and when Lor asks why he needs to know the man responds, “Ever heard of the coronavirus?”
The back and forth continues between Lor and the man with the hotel employee later saying “If you are from China, I need to know.”
When Lor asks why, the man said he has been told “anyone from China has be picked up and quarantined for two weeks.” The employee tells Lor it is company policy.
Eventually Lor and his uncle decided to try another hotel.

Reminds me of college... one day an indian roommate entered the apartment holding and eating from a tub of potato salad. We asked him where he got that. He said from the car. We noted that the car hadn't been driven in a week. Temperatures were moderate. The rest of us just boggled... but didn't phase him in the least.

Nah, the water advice actually goes for a lot of countries. Something about regional incompatibility of what your immune system is built up against. I think places that treat their water sufficiently generally don't have the same issue, but everywhere that has at least some lower standard of water access this rule applies to. And the people that live there, well they just develop the tolerance or whatever for it and are fine, just people newly exposed have an issue.

Chinese prisons emerge as the hotspot for coronavirus, 500 cases detected
More than 500 cases of the new coronavirus have been detected in prisons across China, authorities said Friday, prompting the sacking of a slew of officials.
Hubei, the hard-hit central province where the virus emerged late last year, said Friday that 271 cases were reported by its prisons on Thursday, including 220 that had previously not been known to provincial authorities.
Most of those cases were at the Wuhan Women's Prison in Hubei's capital, He Ping, director for prison administration at the Ministry of Justice, told reporters.
The warden of Wuhan women's prison had been removed for failing to prevent the outbreak, according to local Communist Party newspaper Hubei Daily.
Seven guards and 200 inmates also tested positive for the virus at Rencheng prison in eastern Shandong province, the provincial health commission said at a press conference.
Xie Weijun, head of Shandong's justice department, ad seven other officials were sacked over the outbreak, officials said.
Wu Lei, director of Shandong's prison administration, said the new cases showed that "the implementation of our prevention and control measures have not been effective".
The central government has dispatched a team to launch a "comprehensive investigation" into the outbreak at Rencheng Prison, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Another 34 cases were found at Shilifeng prison in eastern Zhejiang province, leading to the ouster of its director and another official.
A policeman had "deliberately concealed" information about a visit to Wuhan -- the epicentre of the outbreak -- in mid-January and continued to work at the prison, said Xu Xiaobo, deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Justice Department.
"The policeman... was diagnosed with new coronavirus on January 29. He had worked long hours and has come into contact with many people, causing many prisoners to become infected," Xu said.
"All the cases were imported cases. All patients are observed in isolation, and all confirmed patients are sent for treatment," he added.
Xu said no deaths had occurred in the prisons because of the coronavirus. One suspected case was found at the Hubei Juvenile Detention Center, He said.
Hubei announced earlier on Friday that a total of 411 new cases of the virus were confirmed in the province on Thursday, but later revised its figure up to 631 to include the prison numbers.
The clusters came as Chinese authorities have pointed to a drop in officially reported new cases this week as evidence that quarantines and other drastic measures to contain the virus are working.
Most of China remains paralysed over fears of contagion, with schools remaining closed and Beijing ordering those returning to the city to self-quarantine for 14 days.
New cases at two hospitals in the country's capital have also emerged.
Health officials said 36 patients, medical workers and family members have been infected with the virus at Beijing's Fuxing hospital, which has been partially sealed off since January 31.
An elderly woman receiving kidney treatment at Peking University People's Hospital also tested positive after two infected relatives visited her earlier this month, the hospital said.
The virus spreads through droplets disseminated by sneezing or coughing, highlighting the risks for large groups of confined people, possibly without adequate access to soap and water.
Members of China's Uighur minority living in exile have also warned of the risk of the coronavirus spreading in internment camps, where rights groups say more than one million people have been rounded up by authorities.

That may be true in many places but in the area in India my bro was in he asked the people he was working with an none of them drank the water fro the tap only from bottles or a few of them had really nice filter systems in their homes.

Huh, I guess they just don't have adequate water infrastructure there. I know India has had some issues like that, but if I remember right, a recent change in administration has made public sanitation and access to utilities a priority, so hopefully not for too much longer.
Also a bit of an outbreak in Italy now, 50k under voluntary quarantine with 12 confirmed cases and a bunch of pending test results.
Interestingly, and frighteningly, the new case in the US returned from China on the 2nd and only just showed symptoms (longer than the presumed incubation period and current quarantines that I know of).

Iran sounds like it's hiding the number of cases they have.
North Korea seems even more worrisome. Officially, they have zero cases -- but seems unlikely (right next door, lots of trade). They would be singularly ill-equipped to deal with an outbreak. Their isolation might be a plus here, but if it got so bad there as to destabilize the government -- well, a destabilized rogue nuclear state sounds worse than COVID-19.
