Wuhan, China, is about to be quarantined as the coronavirus outbreak grows. The city has 3 million more residents than New York City.

On Wednesday, local disease-control authorities in Wuhan issued an order to quarantine the city, which is slated to go into effect at 10 a.m. local time on Thursday. The order stops all public transportation, including city buses, trains, and ferries. It also prevents any buses or trains from coming into or leaving the city and grounds all planes at the Wuhan airport.

According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), this move will help Chinese authorities control the outbreak in the country as well as stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus to other countries.

"What they're doing is a very, very strong measure," Ghebreyesus said in a WHO press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

That's a very bold step, when was the last time an entire city was quarantined?

It's like they aren't letting on how bad it really is.

I..... can't think of one? Certainly it's never happened to a city anywhere near this big, at least.








Honestly, though, good. I'm glad they're taking containing the spread of it seriously. I hope the quarantine doesn't have to last for long and this doesn't lead to problems with people getting food, treatment, or other necessities. China has a bit of a history with understating medical issues, and it's good to see more decisive steps being taken. Since we don't really know how bad the virus can be, keeping it contained is sort of the best we can hope for if it has real epidemic potential.


From the initial stuff I've seen, it certainly doesn't seem to be as deadly or virulent as ebola (a very good thing), but it certainly doesn't have to be to cause major problems in population centers. It's spread a bit around the globe, but hopefully this kind of action will encourage others to screen and seek treatment if they show symptoms to limit the spread elsewhere.

Most transport in Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, was suspended on Thursday morning and people were told not to leave. Hours later, neighboring Huanggang, a city of about 7 million people, announced a similar lockdown.

“The lockdown of 11 million people is unprecedented in public health history, so it is certainly not a recommendation the WHO has made,” Gauden Galea, the World Health Organization’s representative in Beijing, told Reuters.

According to some quick research, here and here

Flu infects about 8% of people in freedom land. Mortality is then about 0.25% average.

In contrast this virus seems to be at about 3% mortality, which is 10x more deadly than the current flu virus average. So I do think this is cause for concern.

No its because they have open markets and animal rearing rules that are pretty weak for meats from various animals we dont usually eat in the west.

Spanish flu had 5% death rates and that was bad enough as flu can easily infect most of the population in short time. But we should have a vaccine for this soon and those who are regularly vaccinated for the flu get an accumulation of resistance to families of viruses...


As for overpopulation we dont have it. Look at Australia fires that killed an approximate 1 billion animals. If billions of animals can live, hunt, graze and gather on the relatively small edges of the mostly arid australian desert Im sure humans can provide for plenty more humans with our modern means.

Not only is there ample room for more people we need to make the population younger.

Here's what's interesting about this...

The coronavirus itself is not the scariest thing ever. We've seen worse get out there. Not saying it's great, everyone should be cautious and concerned, but if the coronavirus goes worldwide, it doesn't look like it will be more serious than the MERS or SARS outbreaks. It appears to be a less lethal cousin of these viruses (again, not saying it's great, this isn't the point I'm trying to make right now).

The point I am making, and what I do think is interesting, is that China is doing ALL IT CAN to contain this right now. Or at least, appears to be. As are the rest of the governments of the world. IF this still spreads, it will tell us how effective our safeguards are against containing a similar but more deadly outbreak in the future. If we can't contain and quarantine this virus less lethal and scary virus, then if EBOLA 2.0 were to get out there, we're ****ed.
