Star Trek: The Motion Picture. 6.5/10. Better than I expected.
I think this was the first time I ever watched through it start to finish. Despite it's bad reputation, I actually thought there was lots of great stuff in this film.
It's slow, in a 2001 Space Odyssey kind of way, but if you know that going in, and you're in the right mood for a slow-burn film, it's fine... actually can be pretty great. Lot's of long, slow, spaceship porn, that lets the audience revel in the scale & majesty of Star Trek space-life.
The first half of the film is much stronger than the last. Lots of great character building, subtle cues about what each character has been doing since the tv series ended, a very cinematic tone & production values, and a very compelling storyline. It really captures the sense of life in the space-navy, and the politics that go along with being an employee of the galactic federation.
Unfortunately the film fails to stick the landing. The overall story ends up being fairly simple (a by-product of how slow the story moves along), and the ending relies entirely on one specific punch-line about the identity of the villain "V'ger" that only sort-of works... there's a great idea here, but the execution is lacking.
Then they further ruin things by throwing in some other stuff about humans merging with the machine to achieve a higher plane of being, which ends up being stupid and unnecessary, and falls completely flat. The ending is quite a failure actually, and feels like maybe it went through a series of last-minute rewrites by committee... very disappointing because the early part of the movie has such a strong and cohesive creative vision.Last edited by SubCog; Oct 14, 2021, 08:21 AM.Originally posted by KACTo be honest I never even found doom 3 to be scary since I have a big dick since birth.

I actually do really like Start Trek The Motion picture. But I feel its mostly nostalgia from when I was a kid and watched it so much. I used to be blown away by the long cinematic space scenes.
Side note, also the Blu-Ray for this movie (and all the original Star Trek movies) looks incredible.

One particular problem was the part where Captain Decker says "I want to join with the machine! I want this, as badly as you wanted the enterprise!" That decision needed to be set up WAAAAAY better. Throughout the film, he's set up as sortof a younger version of Kirk, wanting nothing more than to be a starship captain, despite his somewhat rough personality. They should have written into his character some desire to be seeking communion with a higher power, or wanting to know the mysteries of the universe, or something like that to justify his choice at the end. Or they could have gone another direction and focused on how desperately he loved Ilia, and this would be his one chance to be with her. Either one would have EARNED the final story beat... although I'm still not sure it would have fully worked.
If I could rewrite the ending, I would have just left it with them transmitting the code and satisfying V'Ger to leave Earth alone (similar to the end of Star Trek 4). V'Ger could sent them a ton of valuable info about the planets in the galaxy, and they could say "Our scientists will be analyzing this for centuries!", then V'Ger says "Thanks, now that my mission is complete I can go explore higher dimensions", and then disappeared. Maybe robot Ilia gets left behind, and can start to rekindle her relationship with Captain Decker? I think that ending would have had plenty of that "sense of wonder" that they were going for, without biting off more than they could chew. Then Dr. McCoy, rather than saying his dumb line about birthing a new baby lifeform, could say something about sending the kid off to college.

they kinda lost their magic long time ago. They're not bad per se, it's just that there are hundreds of movies like that, so they no longer stand out of the mass. I really loved the early ones back then. But lately i find most of them very much 'meh'.

Granted, there were character motivations that were glossed over in the movie where you had pages of the decision making processes in the comics. So in the movie it looks like one character goes from A to B quickly. But if they actually did the movie as a straight visualization of the comics it would have taken 3 or 4 movies to fill.
But, honestly, they have done the same thing with every movie that they have. They have to cut stuff and change stuff to make it fit in that format.
The main problem here is that Injustice was so damn good in Comic format that no matter what DC Animation did, it would be hated by the fans.
