However, Vera Farmiga is a chameleon. She was fantastic.
I'll go with 5/10 because acting was good but the movie was indeed meh.

It wasn't the Tony prequel I wanted. Now, if they do a follow-up movie (or two) I'll forgive them.

It was ok, really wasn’t centered on Tony hardly at all.

Not sure why it's so difficult to keep Bond quality consistent. Series seems to suffer from that even-odd quality pattern.
You’re not sure why? It’s a series spanning like 5 decades, with god knows how many re-creations based on what they wanted. Hell it’s hard enough to keep quality consistent with just a couple movies made years apart. You want consistency in a series spanning decades? 🥲

Well no, I'm mostly talking about the newer movies. The Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig series each started out strong, with a very well articulated vision for the character and tone. There was good reason to expect consistent follow-throughs.

Of course the older movies were going to be an inconsistent mess.

btw, my favorite Sean Connery 007 movie is The Rock.

Ohh my bad thought you’re talking about the whole series. Even if we focus on one actor’s run as bond though, there are SO many variables… the studio’s vision, availability, public reception, etc. I also feel like they almost purposely try to have a serious one, a fun one, a more touching one, etc in each run, but maybe that’s just me. Maybe to appeal to different fans…

Well they seem to be able to make quality films when they want, but it's on a tick-tock schedule, alternating between good and bad.

Goldeneye - good
Tomorrow never dies - mediocre
World is not enough - good
Die another day - mediocre
Casino Royale - good
Quantum of Solace - mediocre/bad
Skyfall - good
Spectre - bad
No time to die - should be good, i guess?

The cadence is so regular, it seems like they must be doing it on purpose, right? Maybe they feel like they need to screw up every-other film so that they can have regular big-returns?

You'd think they'd just say: "Hey, we've got an even-number film, but we don't want it to suck, so let's pretend it was an odd-number film and treat it that way!"

Sky fall was one of the stupidest bond movies I saw.
Same with world is not enough. Tomorrow never dies was much better.
I thought Spectre was a huge leg above that.

Hold on a sec while subcog checks metacritic. Yeah, ok:

Spectre has a 60 / 6.8

Skyfall has a 81 / 7.7 with a "Must see" badge.

Metacritic may still be "opinion", but at least it's somewhat data-driven.

I know why people loved skyfall. Because Judi Dench dies. Or because Bond plays shoot the <removed> as a drunk man w/ the villain. Or because he introduced the fight scene that is now copied 5 times over with shadows and back light. Americans love that shite.

But otherwise from a story and villainy perspective Spectre was much better.

Also world is not enough and tomorrow never dies are usually rated a few points around each other but most consider them bad bond movies. Still for me tomorrow never dies actually had a plot whereas, world is not enough felt like a cut down movie. But sure because the <removed> had Stockholm syndrome all of a sudden the Americans start loving the movie.

Watched Blackfish (2013) on Sky. That was a disturbing documentary to say at least. Very saddening.

The many gays of Newark. Not sure if this is a prequel to something (I heard soprano there so maybe that show?). Don’t have the context but was a decent movie. 5/10.

Watched No One Gets Out Alive and V/H/S/94.

No One Gets Out Alive was pretty good with some pretty creepy [atmospheric] imagery. However, and sorry to say, V/H/S/94 was a let down. I am not quite sure how it has a 95% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Earlier V/H/S movies were much better and I even liked the much hated V/H/S: Viral. The acting in this was also really amateur.

I definitely recommend watching the 4 previous Daniel Craig films immediately before watching it- Spectre is actually much better once you see how it blends in to No Time to Die.
