It's called lake-effect snow. Ask Gravy what it's like; it's freaky.Love take me down to the streets - Wings

I've lived in Cleveland area (20 years) and Detroit Area (7 years), and have experienced lake effect snow more times than I can count. And no it is not that freaky, and it is not one minute dry with the next minute bam holy hell I cant see crap, and yes semi-truck drivers are always driving too fast for the conditions. It's more like I should slow down its getting bad, holy hell I cant see crap. There is always time to slow down for the conditions.

The thing is though that you know it happens so you know to expect it and also in that video, there was obviously snow all over the roads and the visibility was not changing.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
I know it's easy to just proclaim that everyone is a moron, but I'd like to think it's a bit more complicated than that. I myself almost got in a huge wreck with multiple vehicles 5 years ago on that same interstate outside of Rawlins, WY when a squall came in faster than anything else I've ever experienced to date - and I live in state known for its blizzards, so that's saying something.
That stretch of highway between Rawlins & Cheyenne is notorious for conditions being fine one second and then the next, gale-force winds & snow come out of nowhere. It's really difficult to predict, so unless they just made the speed limit 20mph for the entire winter - even when the conditions are good (which it is most of the time) - then it's difficult to avoid the accidents.
Now you can believe whatever you want, but if I was you I wouldn't use a video taken in upper New York (which is almost 3,000 kilometers away from southern Wyoming) as a good comparison any more than I would take the opinions of people who have driven thousands of kilometers away in Ohio & Wisconsin as evidence that they somehow know what the late winter squalls of southern Wyoming are like.Last edited by curio; Apr 19, 2015, 09:45 AM.Love take me down to the streets - Wings

Couldn't really tell how fast those rigs in the rear were going. I see plenty of dumbass truckers going 50-65 on full snow-covered highway, unplowed, unsalted, with low visibility.
Whenever I see these conditions on the highway, you're guaranteed to see wrecks on the road.

Black ice on the other hand: That's a real **** of a thing, and I'll forgive people who wreck on that because it's nigh impossible to see it on the road. Hell, I've spun my own car out at low speed on a roundabout (even posted a video of it here on Rage) when the roads were wet, and it masked an oil patch on the road that I unknowingly drove over. Then again, I was doing all of 30kph at the time, slow enough that I was able to control the spin so I didn't hit any kerbs, and the other driver behind me was leaving prudential distance so they had plenty of time to stop. Meh.
