Right now I'm listening to "I Need Somebody to Lean On," recorded by Elvis Presley in 1964 for the Viva Las Vegas EP, the soundtrack to the film of the same name.
The fact that Elvis and RCA chose to issue an EP instead of an LP is surprising. The material was much stronger than that recorded for his previous soundtrack, the Kissin' Cousins LP released only a month prior, and the film itself was a success commercially and creatively, considering the chemistry between the singer and his female co-star Ann-Margret was practically tangible. It's even more surprising when one considers that Elvis recorded two more songs for Viva Las Vegas than he did for its predecessor. Elvis' next album, the soundtrack to Roustabout released in October, made it to #1 on "The Billboard 200" list, leaving us only to wonder where Viva Las Vegas might have gone had it been an LP.
"I Need Somebody to Lean On" was one of Elvis' best (sixties) soundtrack songs, and was written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.
