anyone familiar with agoraphobia?

and/or any anxiety problems in general.
it describes my wife better than anything else ive seen yet. i dont care to give details, but i just wanted to ask a bit. ive worked on leaning her towards acknowledging it and going to some counseling together but she isnt quite seeing it yet.
im at work right now though and dont have to time to say much more, but i will on lunch. just wanted to get it posted in the morning.

yea, this can be something hard to live with. Always getting the feeling that people are talking about you, whispering behind your back, just inches from you in plain sight. The feelings that no matter what you do or say, you are just an mess of human life.

First of all, phobias like this are very serious and, if your wife does indeed suffer from this - I hope she is willing to get counseling.

I remember the first time I heard the term agoraphobia (but don't remember the name of the show ). It was a skit showing a agoraphobic / claustrophobic lady running in and out of her home (and in and out ...) screaming each time she took a few steps one way or the other. Would be awful, but the skit was hilarious.

Agoraphobia nowadays usually refers to being afraid of situations that could induce panic in someone. If somebody has panic attacks in social gatherings, and they start avoiding going to them because they're afraid of the possible panic, they're referred to as agoraphobic. I had some agoraphobia this week, I had to get an electrocardiogram done, and I avoided going to karate because I was afraid once I got all worked up I'd panic because I'd think something was wrong with my heart.

I'm sure you wern't referring to agoraphobia in anything after the first sentance there.
After the first sentance it sounds like you're talking about traits from paranoid personality disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and borderline personality disorder, though lots of traits from mental disorders overlap.

i would say that everyone has a little bit of social anxiety.(i equate agoraphobia as very similar/same) however when it gets in the way of your life that is when it causes problems.

if she gets very very anxious about going places. perhaps maybe out to dinner at a restaurant or going to stores that is when i would look into help. then again i am no doctor and honestly alot of times i feel that way and i didn't/haven't choosen medication.

Sorry, I did make myself unclear there. I was talking from personal experiance from when I was a teenager 10 years ago. Back then, agoraphobia was a lump sum disorder. Any situation that caused anxiety attacks was largly misplaced into that situation. Before the joys of mass drugging kids with prozac .
While the conditions that you stated above are the root causes - can lead to agoraphobia, which is just the end cause - or by product of such disorders. Anxiety attacks in normal day situations..

Just because I didn't laugh doesn't mean I didn't get it.

I think I have mild agoraphobia, nothing too bad really. I'm a functional member of society, have a job, etc. but most of the time I'd rather just stay home. Sometimes I get a little nervous before I have to go out but that's pretty much it.

shinks these days call agoraphobia the actual fear of having a panic attack. Avoiding situations not because you're afraid of the situation itself, but because you're afraid of the panic attacks that you might have to feel if you put yourself in that situation. It's sort of hard to explain
