Thief, System Shock 2 patches add modern OS compatibility, widescreen support, more

New unofficial patches have surfaced for classic games Thief 2: The Metal Age and System Shock 2, rendering the games easily playable on new operating systems like Windows 7, and also adding a variety of handy features and fixes. Highlights include windowed mode, widescreen resolution support, 32-bit colour support, framerate cap option, and graphics improvements.

Interestingly, the source of the patches is currently unknown; given how low level the changes are, speculation and rumors indicate a former developer may be behind them and leaked them to circumvent the otherwise nigh impossible legal process.

Hit the source to download the patches.

This is fantastic news if is indeed a old developer then kudos to him, more should do the same and give new blood to old games.

p.s - I would kill for someone to release the source code of Severance the blade of Darkness engine that would be a fantastic day for me.

Yeah I tried it with Thief 2 omg works beautifully, no more res switching when going between menu and in game, you can pick wide screen resolutions from in game, you can use OpenAL instead of EAX which doesn't work on new hardware so that's good. And it runs way smoother now.
Definitely a dev with access to source code, you can't just hex edit an EXE like that.

Awesome to hear! I'll probably do an article on this soon, actually.

Just to correct one point, old EAX games do work on new hardware and Windows OS's with the use of creative alchemy, what it does is capture the original EAX calls has the game is running and convert them to OpenAL calls.

p.s - Now a friendly word of advice, to anyone wanting a sound card, please stay away from Creative, they are known for very shady customer support and buggy drivers. For example on my case they toke away DTS and Dolby Digital support from my sound card when i upgraded to W7 and demanded new payment for that features. There's also a bug on W764 that makes the use of microphones impossible in soundblaster Audagy cards and there has been no fix for this problem from creative for years now, dito.
