    AMD Launches GCN for mobility, highest performance mobile graphics

    AMD's newest graphics products are mobility GPU's based on the GCN architecture, mobile versions of Cape Verde and Pitcairn. The three GPU's are codenamed London as a group and individually are Wimbledon (HD 7900M), Heathrow (HD 7800M), and Chelsea (HD 7700M).

    AMD today introduced its full line of revolutionary mobile discrete graphics based on the company's acclaimed Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture, which includes the AMD Radeon(TM) HD 7900M, HD 7800M, and HD 7700M Series GPUs.(1) New to the AMD Radeon HD 7000M Series is AMD Enduro(TM) technology(2), the latest cutting-edge power solution from AMD which automatically and seamlessly switches between integrated graphics and the AMD Radeon(TM) discrete GPU, depending on system or application requirements -- helping to maximize battery life without having to compromise performance. Based on the latest 28nm process technology, and fully equipped with DirectX(R) 11.1 support, the AMD Radeon HD 7000M Series of GPUs represent the most feature-rich mobile graphics launch since the company introduced its mobile product line.

    The AMD Radeon HD 7900M Wimbledon is based on the same design as the desktop AMD Radeon HD 7870 chips, using the Pitcairn chip. The full 1280 SP / 80 texture unit configuration is preserved, with only the clockspeeds different from the desktop chips with the Wimbledon core running at 850MHz and some flexibility for OEM's to set memory clock speeds for the GDDR5 attached. AMD estimate the AMD Radeon HD 7970M to be up to 60% faster than the previous generation high end mobility chip, the Radeon HD 6990M.

    The AMD Radeon HD 7800M Heathrow is based on the desktop HD 7870M Cape Verde, with 640 SP and 40 texture units, running at 800MHz core and 1GHz memory (4Gbps QDR).

    The AMD Radeon HD 7700M Chelsea is also based on Cape Verde, using the Pro variant - 512 SP's with 32 texture units, and a core clock of 675MHz and 1GHz memory clock.

    Like AMD's desktop chips, these products support AMD PowerTune, ZeroCore Power, and a new technology branded Enduro. Enduro is the new marketing name for switchable graphics, and unlike NVIDIA Optimus there is no licensing fee for OEM's to implement it in their designs. Enduro can be used in systems that are Optimus enabled, meaning OEM's have the flexibility to offer both NVIDIA and AMD switchable graphics technologies, as found in the Alienware M17x. AMD also confirmed that these chips will support Dual Graphics configurations with APU's, indicating that upcoming Trinity-based products with Crossfire VLIW4 architecture with GCN for high performance graphics.
