    Rage3D stands up against censorship

Today, from 12am - 12pm EST (GMT -5), Rage3D.com was offline, adding our voice in the fight against censorship.

While we are now back online, this fight is far from over. We ask each of you to contact your representative, and voice your opposition to SOPA & PIPA.

For more information, please visit Wikipedia.

Grats on the unified, peaceful protest. I have already sent a letter to my representative voicing my displeasure. Only by standing united can we defeat the corrupt politicians that have been bought and paid for by the very same proponents of these draconian pieces of legislature. My advice to the representatives is to get their houses in order (spending, etc.) first.

Not to be the wet blanket and all, but as good as this online protest is at getting some attention about the issue I think it probably won't have that much pull without the money sites. If the big *money* sites decided to join in it would be an entirely different matter. Just imagine if Google, Yahoo, Microsoft (Bing), and online sales/auction houses like eBay decided to take a 24 hour holiday...and threatened to do the same thing again on a random day every month in protest. THAT would get the point across.

My site is offline and will remain offline till midnight tonight to show my support in standing up against censorship. to Rage3D for being one of thousands of sites who decided to do the same.

SOPA and PIPA are the wrong ways to go about fixing an issue that was created by greedy corporations. There are better ways to handle the situation that is copyright infringement. Censorship is not one of them.

The MPAA and RIAA member companies want them...it's all for our own good, dontchaknow?

That's great, don't get me wrong, but...if they voted on it right now, what would the outcome be?

Edit: Now, imagine if yesterday Google said "You know, we dislike this legislation as well as it could negatively affect our users and our own company as well, so we are going to completely pull the plug on our search engine, map service, video service, etc. for 24 hours tomorrow in protest." Can you imagine what would have happened today?

They would have lost a crap load of money in ad revenue.

And possibly sued for breach of contract from those who pay for their services.

This would be far more effective.

I find it interesting that the approach chosen by the internet sites opposing SOPA and PIPA is to uss the same model as the MPAA/RIAA for DRM - punish the customers who value your service, rather than spending money to lobby/educate/inform. MPAA lobbied Govn't and look where they got; like I said, if Facebook, Google, took their profits and lobbied with it, where would we be?

It always seems like most consumers remember to protest only after the draconian freedom destroying policies are in place, by which time it's already far too late. It's really sad that people are so apathetic towards politics that it takes something drastic like this to get them to wake the **** up and realize that these bills could actually affect them if they pass.
