Ninth Foxconn Worker Dies in China

11 people working for Foxconn in China have attempted suicide this year (2 survived). Foxconn produces the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 as well as the iPhone and iPad.

In what is starting to look like a trend for the Chinese giant Foxconn, another worker has committed suicide this year, now totaling 9 for 2010.

A worker at Foxconn Technology Group, which makes iPhones and iPads, jumped to his death Friday from a building in the southern Chinese boomtown of Shenzhen — the ninth suicide this year at the world’s largest contract maker of electronics, state-run media reported.

The latest victim, logistics worker Nan Gang, 21, leapt from a four-story factory building about a half hour after finishing his shift at 4 a.m., reported the Xinhua News Agency, quoting a city police spokesman, Huang Jianwei. Nan, a migrant from central Hubei province, landed on his head and died at the scene, Xinhua said, without providing further details.

Don't they make them work with their tiny hands 14hrs/day 7days/week in a tight sealed locked up glass room that's dust free doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again? Of course they go insane what do they have to live for?

This is how manual production is everywhere. Not all production can be automatic, a lot of manual work has to be done too. I know I myself could never do such a repetitive job.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that foxconn has around 300k workers, so this probably falls within the normal suicide rate in China.

Something is going to make these people do this, like long ass work hours, low (minimum wage) pay and the repetitive work.

I believe it's reflected in their culture too. I can't even find the right words to describe it specifically, but certain Chinese emigrants display such sadness through their body language.

EDIT: I guess I'm only referring to people from certain cities in China where this happens.

It's true. The sad reality is if one asian dies on the job they'll just get millions more with nimble fingers to replace them. Human life is dispensable, and that is very apparent here.
