Ninth Foxconn Worker Dies in China

11 people working for Foxconn in China have attempted suicide this year (2 survived). Foxconn produces the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 as well as the iPhone and iPad.

In what is starting to look like a trend for the Chinese giant Foxconn, another worker has committed suicide this year, now totaling 9 for 2010.

A worker at Foxconn Technology Group, which makes iPhones and iPads, jumped to his death Friday from a building in the southern Chinese boomtown of Shenzhen — the ninth suicide this year at the world’s largest contract maker of electronics, state-run media reported.

The latest victim, logistics worker Nan Gang, 21, leapt from a four-story factory building about a half hour after finishing his shift at 4 a.m., reported the Xinhua News Agency, quoting a city police spokesman, Huang Jianwei. Nan, a migrant from central Hubei province, landed on his head and died at the scene, Xinhua said, without providing further details.

Don't they make them work with their tiny hands 14hrs/day 7days/week in a tight sealed locked up glass room that's dust free doing the same thing over and over and over and over and over again? Of course they go insane what do they have to live for?

This is how manual production is everywhere. Not all production can be automatic, a lot of manual work has to be done too. I know I myself could never do such a repetitive job.

One thing that needs to be mentioned is that foxconn has around 300k workers, so this probably falls within the normal suicide rate in China.
Some cool info: Tibeten monks, after twenty years or so of practise in the Himalaya, control their brain stem - they can control their heart beat, blood pressure etc. After thirty years they can connect to the internet purely by meditation, setting TCP stacks in their neurons and stuff. Right now I am chatting with a monk who is sitting naked in an ice storm on his towel, his only possesion. He's using ipv6.

Some more information about the issue can be found here too:

Laura June has been an Editor at Engadget since October of 2008. The views expressed in this editorial are her own, cobbled together by hand, with love, in the United States of America, for a fair wage. I'm not an economist, and in fact, I've never been very good with money or math. I'm not a manufacturer either -- the only things I make with my own hands are quilts and cakes. I know, however, from these experiences, that the best products take time, and are made with care from the best available materials. It's obvious, by now -- or it should be -- that something's going on at Foxconn (headquarter in Tucheng, Taiwan), the owners of massive factories in China which most famously assembles Apple products (though it's also responsible for many, many others). There have been several suicide attempts this year -- at least eight (up from two last year) of them successful (though it's been pointed out that the number is pretty much on par with the rest of China) -- and over the past few days we've seen what can only be called a shocking expose by a worker who went undercover there. It's clear, from this report and others (such as last month's National Labor Committee report on the KYE factory in Dongguan City) that most of the people who assemble our gadgets do so under conditions we, in America would never tolerate, and for a wage that is paltry, to say the least. I'm hesitant to pass judgment en masse on how an entire country or a specific factory does business, and I don't have the knowledge or expertise to do so. So I'm not going to.

Something is going to make these people do this, like long ass work hours, low (minimum wage) pay and the repetitive work.

or just living in a country where the individual is choked to death. i have a hard time imagining being surrounded by such a population daily, let alone to work in such conditions.

china is a scary place to be born in.

I believe it's reflected in their culture too. I can't even find the right words to describe it specifically, but certain Chinese emigrants display such sadness through their body language.

EDIT: I guess I'm only referring to people from certain cities in China where this happens.

Every time a Foxconn worker dies an Apple gets its wings.

I know this is aweful but does no one else see the humor of so many people that work on Apple products committing suicide? I wonder what a study of Apple users would show, is the suicide rate higher?

It's true. The sad reality is if one asian dies on the job they'll just get millions more with nimble fingers to replace them. Human life is dispensable, and that is very apparent here.
