what IBM is working on....makes interesting read

IBM took a dare: Build a supercomputer that predicts the invisible process of protein folding. Spend $100 million, increase processing speed 100-fold, and revolutionize the field. Then convince the biologists it matters. "There really aren’t any winners," David Baker explained with a grin when I asked him how it felt to be a winner. We […]

"IBM's plan calls for Blue Gene to be finished in 2004, and to be almost 100 times more powerful than ASCI White, currently the world's fastest supercomputer. At peak efficiency, ASCI White is capable of just over 12 teraflops, or 12 trillion floating-point operations (those that keep track of decimal places) per second. Blue Gene will harness 4 million processors to deliver 1,000 teraflops, otherwise known as a petaflop. Today, the Blue Gene team is working on prototypes of the processors, and construction of the machine itself should begin in 2003."

read the whole article, very impressive
