So far I’ve been getting more of the 140k ppd WUs. Hopefully it stays that way!
I'm glad it's working out for someone!

I'm getting killed over here. Yesterday I had a string of three in a row that performed 25% slower than the already slow ones I had been getting. I'm talking 60k PPD on a GPU that used to get 1M+. A unit that takes four hours to complete and maybe gets 9k points.

The project lead posted on the Folding Forum - lots of people are complaining about it (and there are those like you who love them). He said that the results returned are incredibly valuable and thanked everyone for contributing. It was enough to keep me going for a little bit. Looking forward to the end of this project though. I do feel like it's a waste of resources.

My 1060 GTX gets these and its PPD is unchanged @ 350k. I really need to shut that laptop off though. You wouldn't believe how hot the surface gets above the keyboard. Wipe it with a damp paper towel and you can see steam as it dries.

Bois, we're about to see what my somehow not melted Gigabyte HD 7970 can do. Sending my Vega 64 in for RMA, hopefully tomorrow. Tired of the crashing. Finally went to MSI tech support to see what could be done and they said to RMA it.

This 7970 has been through some serious ****. It has brown spots on the board from heat. My case actually overpowered the video card's cooling system and dust caked the card's exhaust fins as air was being sucked in. The amount of heat emanating from the side of my case was epic. That was remedied, I have learned from that experience. The card later went on to support my Witcher 3 endeavors. Before the weekend begins, it will fold.

The 7970 brings back some memories! I never owned one, but held one in my hands right after their initial release, and could feel the power
I'd be very curious to know the PPD from it!

Your 7970 should be around half of a FuryX output mine were. It may even perform well with those 134x wu's.

Whelp, initial results are a bit disappointing. Looks like it will get about 250k PPD when no CPU folding, and about 210k PPD with the CPU folding.

The card is much louder than the Vega 64. I remember saying this before but it's another thing to be sitting next to it after not hearing it for 18 months. Roughly the same power draw as Vega with 7% downclock, but runs 10C cooler.

Hopefully when it finishes this 16435 WU in 10 hours, it will pick up one of the 134X ones.

My Vega is pulling about 260W doing [email protected]. But, I have it running 1700Mhz locked. Heat is an understatement. -_- If it was winter, It'd do 1800Mhz easy but temps are just too high for it to hold that stable at the voltage I want it to. 1.065V is where I have mine at.

But yours is liquid cooled. In my "hot spot" thread you said your temps were around 65C @ 1800Mhz. That really isn't hot, and you know this. With default settings, mine ran at 79C. When I unplugged 2/3 fans on my case, it ran at 84C and more stable (but Jeebus be cursed it made my basement hot) (and it still crashed... just significantly less).

I looked at the box for my 7970. Pricetag: $ 679.99. I'm squeezing every penny out of this sonofabitch. Played some games with it tonight. Not disappointed.

Its hot. The difference is, liquid cooler removes heat more efficiently than air so its still producing the same amount heat. 65C is hot for 14nm and Vega. Vega loves to run cooler. Cooler = higher clocks.

That you are. lol. If it works, keep on usin it. :-p

It's funny... I haven't ever watched temps, fan speeds, etc. until I started folding. Never bothered seeing how hot a card can get, never tried overclocking.

Apparently I could have run my Gigabyte 7970 at a 10% overclock out of the box, and that's after its own 4% embedded overclock. It stays around 65C at stock speeds, under folding load.

The 134XX WUs on this thing get about 33% less points than on Vega, and take 2 hours instead of 1 to complete. Even so, the PPD is 50% lower on the 7970 than with other WUs.

I think the fact that I've had no crashes with folding for 36 hours straight, and off/on since that there was something wrong with the video card. If MSI comes back with "no problem found" I'm going to flip my lid.

And for further bad news (always hardware issues with me), one of the fan bearings rattles like crazy. I looked at it while running; the fan closest to the back of the PC is running about 1/2 RPM of the other two. With the video card out, that fan physically spins freely while the others do not. If fans are set to 40% or less, it barely spins at all. While temps stay relatively low, I'm certain that nothing on that side of the board is monitored and some components will be subject to overheating if that fan does crap out entirely.

I ended up buying one of these to be a stop-gap but I'm worried that it will do more harm than good. Running it at a low throttle for now.

In the meantime, I waffle between "f*** it, let the GPU fold" and "don't want my card to die" and "if it dies then you can finally throw it away" and "wait until the fixed card comes in before you kill it - what if the 'fixed' card isn't fixed" and "your laptop performs better anyway - you shouldn't even be bothering with this".

I've figured out that locking the fans at 80% (there is no point graph for this card, just a manual "right now and forever" adjust) prevents the most noise and keeps the card nice and cool while folding.

Default settings have them cranking up to 100% by the time the card hits 60C, which probably didn't help the wear and tear. According to the internet, the GPU is spec'd for 95C. New GPU BIOS updates probably fixed this but too late now.

Anyway back to folding - with these 134XX WUs I'm only getting about 140k less PPD than my Vega 64 anyway. All other projects, 7970 gets 210k PPD. This one, 110k PPD. It also runs much cooler.

(May run it at night when its cooler and the AC's can keep up.. but during the day, it'll be offline)

Understandable. Still surprised to learn that a liquid cooled component can produce so much heat, but it makes sense that the heat is being produced by the energy used anyway. It has to go somewhere. What if you used reference board clocks instead of shutting it down?

My 7970 has been holding up pretty well. It sounds like absolute donkey **** on a cold startup so I've just been letting it run at 80% fan throttle, avoiding turning off my PC. GPU temp stays at 63C or lower, which means the slow fan section is probably at 80C.

The very low PPD 134XX WUs I complained about earlier have been tinkered with. John Chodera has actually been posting in the folding forum, explaining why the PPD is so low and legitimately trying to fix the issue. Community outreach goes such a long way with keeping people engaged.

Now, some 134XX run at 180k PPD, others run at 350k PPD. I was hoping to have my V64 back by now. I've been seriously considering getting a 5700XT or RTX 2070 Super. The disorder about this is the 7970 seems to handle modern games surprisingly well. The only reason I want to upgrade is to increase my PPD.

Well open your windows and take some clothes off. No excuses.

Going out of town for a bit. Laptop will be with me and big PC will be powered down. Only reason is because if that HD 7870 fan dies while we are gone it could become a fire hazard.

I'm only folding with a single 1070, temp limited to 61c with auto fan (41-46%) and the [email protected], .950v.

I have a 1650 Super folding next to me, current temp also 61c with 37% fan. The card doesn't draw much but still manages to raise the room temps a few degrees

I intended to come back to this thread with a line chart showing a massive increase in PPD and ask the question, "Can you tell I got my Vega 64 back?"

                                          Instead I post this:

Can you tell I got my Vega 64 back, and that it was not fixed? Tried to fold yesterday with a -14% downclock, and an aggressive fan ramp. This kept the card under 140W and under 68C. Still crashed.

Note: The Application errors to the left are all NahimicService.exe. It's trash but apparently if it's not installed and running, my speaker output option will randomly disappear.

That is almost definitely due to the Moonshot COVID project. Right now they're showing up as 13421. They typically run 1/3 as high PPD on high end video cards, but on lower end they are almost 50% higher PPD. Some have run as low as 1/6 as for me. Vega 64 folding at 52 watts. Get 13420, and back to normal. Haven't seen 13421 in a couple days.

It was a tough battle, Honsy. The fact that you didn't know you were fighting it is irrelevant. I won. Turning my laptop off tomorrow.

What all are you folding with now? I've had this 1070 since early 2016. Next gen cards can't come soon enough... I've had a death grip on my wallet wrt gaming since the crypto craze. Prices -still- seem artificially inflated/fixed, to me. Hopefully next gen competition will at least ease my perception, if not the actual prices. lol

I ended up giving up on the Vega 64 and got a 5700XT. I RMA'd the Vega a 2nd time and it's been in repair for a week. Not sure what I'll do with it when it gets back, assuming it's fixed.

But the new card is a beast. Micro Center had the Sapphire Nitro+ 5700XT for $435. When I asked about it the guy said the bigger version was quieter because the cooling solution was much more efficient, and the only reason not to get it was if you didn't have enough case space. Arrogantly I thought I had plenty of room for any card. Nope. This one was a full inch+ more beastier than the Vega 64. It forced me to route my motherboard cable correctly.

Just running it with default settings out of the box. Not a single crash in two weeks.

                                                          Nice,

I will be looking for a new card as well as my RX470 just died.

Was folding and playing a game when the PC just died and would not restart.
It restarted fine once I removed the RX470 card though.

                                                          Bummer.

That sucks man... I've lost hardware to folding in the past. A power supply and a CPU (but the CPU was my fault for trying to increase PPD ). Many say that folding just exposes existing issues, but I don't necessarily agree.

It's pure bliss being able to fold and not worry about crashes. I genuinely thought the occasional crash was just the nature of [email protected], and that everybody encountered them. Mine just were more frequent.

                                                            No - FlyorDie pegged it.

Anyway, if you have the case space for it, the Nitro+ is the quietest card I've had for as long as I can remember. It pulls about 180W (GPU) and gets 1.5M PPD with non 13421 WUs (gets about 600k PPD with the 13421's, @ 70W). Temp stays at 75C and fan RPM never breaks 3 digits. When it's idling, the fans don't even spin.

I think getting bigger than reference, specialized cooled GPUs is going to be my MO from here on out.

There was a fan in front of the PSU that I moved up to blow directly onto the card and also help push air in the correct direction through the case.

But will be off and on for the next 2-3 weeks as I lay the prepwork for going to hard tubing. Moving to a 120mm rad with push/pull fans, moving the pump to the top of the loop so I don't have to 100% remove ALL the air from the system... it sucks. lol.

Admittedly, as much as I wish my Vega 64 were stable and I didn't have to return it, the heat that thing put out was an order of magnitude higher than the 5700XT. I suspect the only reason my basement were bearable in the past was because it kept crashing.

Loser-P has woken from being dormant and picked up the folding habit, roughly two days before I was to overtake. That is adding another 2.5M PPD to our stats, and helped us tough 33M points in one day (yesterday) as a team - the highest I've seen.
