    is my ati 4870 dying?

    Hey,
I have this card for years now and I got no problems until recently, every time the clock enters in 3d mode (basically anything above 500mhz) it freezes my pc with the known message "display driver amd...stopped responding and recovered".
I've tried everything I could think or google (from clean installs,TD,vids, registries etc) but the problem remains and the card works (fine though) with a core clock set to run below 500.

So should I just recycle it and go for a new one or there's still any hope ?

Just my ten cents worth but the only time I had a problem like that with a graphics card it was my PSU not supplying enough power to the card. Can you try the card in another machine ? Maybe a friend's PC ?

Check the card's fan throroughly for clogged dust. While you're at it, check inside the PC (processor fan) for clogged dust and check how is the airflow. Especially during summer temperatures dust chokes.
Check that both the card's powercables are connected. If you think having a "seasonic 650" means it can't fail, you're wrong, and if it's a modular one, check that side of the powercables as well.

I was fortunate a friend of mine was building a pc for his son and we swap cards for testing purposes. The test card (7950) is working on my pc and mine 4870 is keep doing the same things on his own pc. So I guess its time to rip my ati4870 and close the thread.
