    4850 dying?

Over the last couple months had a few BSOD's with something like "atixxx.sys" or "atikmdag.sys" in the error.

Now the PC sometimes doesn't display during post and requires a restart. Have seen artifacts during the windows boot screen (the coloured balls), and now it's starting to crash/freeze on windows desktop too.

    Dead video card?

    I would think so.

I'd probably try reinstalling or rolling back the driver too, as bad driver installs are sometimes the cause of Windows stop errors.

Turns out it was a dead memory stick.

Heh, the fact you saw artifacts threw me off.

I wasn't aware you could see artifacts with bad memory.

Yeah interesting to know a bad stick would cause artifacts I guess the card received corrupt info from RAM and vomited out the artifacts
