    HD5970 problems

hi guys, so i decided to open a thread in here because im so tired of my HD5970 not given the power it should.

the thing is im not able to run any 2012-2013 game at solid 60fps.

In Battlefield 3 without Vsync I have horrible screen tearing and with Vsync on imput lag/cant handle 60fps during intense multiplayer fighting.

In MOHW the same thing as it has the frostbite 2 engine.

In AC3 i cant even reach the 30fps. Stuttering/fps drops in cities etc.

Even some old games like Saint Row The Third dont run like they should.

    My specs are :

    Core i7 920 stock clocks
    6gb of ddr3 ram
HD 5970 with the latest CATALYST(13.2 beta7) even with the latest 11.12 cap
    Win 7 x64

I think all those games ive mentioned should run between medium/high settings at solid 60fps but thats not happening even at very low settings
All the games ive mentioned are played at 1920x1080, lowering the resolution it´s worst.

So my questions are: Is my cpu bottlenecking this card? im not using the Catalyst version i should been using? what to do??

I think your goals are simply unrealistic. Going off of

Your card is barely 60% as fast as a 7970. You are also severely limited by memory size as the 5970 only get's paired with 2x1024GB. Most games are using the 2GB range now. So alot of your stuff is "streamed". which greatly impacts performance as well.

run GPUz or MSI AB and look at memory usage of the GPU's, see if you're maxxing out. If so, you'll have to lower settings until you get where performance goes up. Also try no AA/AF and see if there's a difference, if there is then you know it's settings and not a driver issue.

thanks for the advise, but dont you think i should be able to play at 1080p and at low settings? i mean games like bf3 and Mohw i cant get solid 60fps with everything at low

not sure what you're looking for then, next step is an OS reinstall and game reinstall to test again.

if I can I will get out my 5970 and try it to see what kind of scores it puts up. Been meaning to make a bitcoin machine anyway...

right now im making a full reinstall of bf3, i appreciete your help.
For the last test ive done it all seem to be a software issue related with the last amd catalyst beta driver and its frame latency i believe

To get a stable framerate in Battlefield 3 without using vsync, try to limit the framerate. Look for the user.cfg file inside your Battlefield 3 folder (usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3). If there is no user.cfg file, create one and add the following line:

              Gametime.MaxvariableFPS 50

Launch the game and see how it feels. Try different values to see what fits your system better.

i got to work bf3 even better with 1600x900, preset low, framelimiter caped at 60
In MOHW, i got solid 60fps at low settings(catalyst 13.1 did the trick)
In AC3 it is horrible, really bad crossfire scaling, barely 30fps with everything at low at 1920x1080
Im surprise i cant stand those games at high settings,i mean i meet the recommend requierements.
Im still thinking AMD has forgotten about HD5000series, and stop given them upgrades

The VLIW5 engine in the Evergreen series is well optimized for now, the 5970 launched in nov 2009 so a lot of the big gains and tweaks are done now. The same GPU architecture is still in place in the 6000 series, and 7000M series, so there are still cards that benefit from updates; the 5000 series is still supported every month. So while there still may be performance to be increased in specific titles I don't think there's any more major problems to fix.

good to hear that!!! i switching back to 12.11b11, as far as i remeber those were the best drivers i have had ever used.
May i returned when 13.2 WQHL arrive.

yeah will try those first!! Shall i used the app CAP with those?

EDIT: Tryed the new 13.3b2, performance with bf3 even worst than 13.2b7.
In AC3 performance increase about 8fps more, playable now at 1920x1080, normal settings.
In MOHW i can play with everything set to lowest and 1920x1080(55-60fps,smooth),but its not like bf3, bf3 its really broken in my opinion, i cant get solid 60fps

Aahhhh, I have a friend that has exactly the same problem. Same specs, almost:
                              i7 920 @ 3.4GHZ
                              6GB DDR3 @ 1634MHZ
                              Corsair "something" 750W PSU
                              ASUS EAH5970
                              Samsung "blabla" 1TB Hard Drive
                              Kingston HyperX "something" SSD
Same problem: not enought fps, and the games that are there now (since you last posted here) are even runing worse. Some have problems like stutering (most of them is that). Since 13.9 and 13.11betaV9.2 the second GPU shows up as disabled in the Catalyst Control Center. So I installed, in his PC, Catalyst 13.11betaV8 which are the latest drivers in which the second GPU is enabled.
Latest games with problems: BF4 (but it got a bit better now); and TITANFAAAALL which i've been playing the beta with him and I play well in both my computers. He has a problem with the latest drivers (even with 13.11BetaV8) of major graphics corruption. Artifacts and characters showing up in the screen that he can't even see anything in front of him. Sometimes it disappears. Sollution: running the game in borderless window mode. Consequence: major loss of fps. 5 fps in the heat of battle even @ 1440x900 with minimum graphics setting.
He tried many other single player games and there's always an issue.

I have a laptop with a i7 @ 2.20GHz, 8 GB DDR3 @ 1333Mhz, regular 7200rpm 500gb hard drive, Radeon HD6990M and I play Titanfall @ 1920x1080 in my 17'' laptop monitor flawlessly. Even in fullscreen (which shows more fps but shows that graphic's corruption too) he has to play with texture quality High. On the other hand I'm able to play in maximum texture setting. Some time ago this laptop was equivalent to his PC (same setup as yours) but sometimes his PC was able to run some games better than my laptop. Now, I don't know what happenned, but his PC is less capable than my laptop.

At home I have a Core 2 Quad Q6600, 3GB DDR2 800, Radeon HD5850, a regular 1TB Hard drive. This setup is outdated but I'm able to play Titanfall beta with better graphics setting than him (although I'm in fullscreen mode and he is in borderless window mode).

I can't understand this, lol. I spent last night formating his win 8.1 harddrive to go back to win7. Then, since 6am, after Windows was installed, I spent 6 hours trying to fix Titanfall's problem in his PC. I did clean installations of lots of the latest versions of AMD graphic drivers. I was able to stop that graphics corruption and artifacts with Cata 12.6 and 12.8, but instead I got low performance.
Another issue is that he has to have another Windows installed. It's for World of Tanks. That game only runs well in Cata 12.6 or 12.8 (and maybe older versions). So, he has a Windows installation with the latest drivers (13.11Betav8 because of what I already said) and a Windows installation with 12.8 just to play World of Tanks. lol Ridiculous. I already googled and installed, uninstalled, formated, tried win8, win7, messed around World of Tanks and Catalyst CC settings, everything!!!

I think 5970 is/was not a good purchase. Don't know if a Crossfire or SLI setup is, too. Since 5970 is basically two crossfired underclocked 5870 GPUs.

Did you find the "immortal drivers"? lol Do you have new info on this after almost a year?
