    9800 SE problem

    Hi,

I have a problem with my ATI 9800 SE.
Whenever I try to run a 3D game, vertical bars appear on my screen. The bars change colour, and consist of rows of pixels. Most surfaces in games change to a colourspectrum.
This only happens when I run a game, not when in windows. But when running a game, and then returning to windows, the problem prevails. Does anyone know what to do?
I already tried to re-install drivers, but that doesn't work. So I think it is my graphics card, but I'm not sure.

    Thanks in advance,

    Alex

Sounds like your core is overheating, possibly. Do you have an overclocks or bios mods? If not check your fan is working and heatsink is clean, not tons of dust bunnies living in it.
Second thought is that it could be RAM, again check if clean and good airflow in your case. Might also be bad power supply to the card, try a different molex/floppy connector.

Download ATITrayTools from Guru3d and run the artifacts test, see what comes up.

I've tried some of the things you said, In atitraytools i cant find the test, but another program called atitools does run that test. It is running now for 4 minutes, and nothing happens. the time before it told me to switch to the retail version of directx?
i will probably try to open my case and try to reconnect all kinds of things and clean everything. it looks a little dusty in there indeed, so maybe that helps.

      thanks for the effort,

      Alex

        Solved!!!

I cleaned my case from the inside, and indeed, my grapics card was covered in dust. i removed it, and didn't have a problem since. Thanks so much for the help . I'm really grateful.
