    7850k Cooling Issue

Just assembled the new build this morning, specs are:

    A10-7850K w/ stock heatsink
    Asrock [email protected] extreme6+
    2x4gb g.skill ripjaws X 2133mhz
    128gb sandisk ssd
    win7 x64sp1

according to the uefi hardware monitor, the apu was idling about 53C. (after installing windows, drivers, etc.); I had gone into it to adjust the memory from the defaults and saw the temps.

I checked the heatsink and it can slighlty be moved, maybe slid around 4 or 5mm on the apu. It's not supposed to move at all, correct? I haven't installed a stock cooler since 2007, but it seemed to go on correctly. I just used the themal pad that was on the bottom of the heatsink.

I was going to upgrade to another cooler in a couple of months anyway, but looks like this might be a right-away thing.

    Ideas/Comments/Thoughts appreciated.

    Anyone?

    <crickets chirping>

well, I guess I'll pick some AS5 or whatever I can find tomorrow and reinstall the sucker, guess if that doesn't do it it's coolermaster 212 time...

Hmm... I recall with enough force most stock heatsinks are able to... "twist" a little bit on top of the CPU. I'd imagine if pushed directly from a side the heatsink would slide a small amount as well.

Yeah, I'd say some movement (and a very small amount at that) is normal with enough pressure. The stock coolers are usually designed to keep the chip from reaching it's peak temp under normal usage scenarios. This is why I never go with just stock cooling if I can help it.

The 212 is a nice improvement and isn't expensive. I'd just pick it up now and slap it on there, get it done and over with.

I never even looked at the stock cooler. Just used some AS and popped on my old Arctic Cooling Freezer. It sits tight with no wishy washy movement. It's keeping the idle/news reading temp to about 9c over ambient. =29c
And it's in a breezy Antec 900 case with all fans on low, resulting is a surprisingly quiet computer.

          thanks, guys....

but **** a duck. I knew it was a bad sign yesterday when it booted right up the first time and windows installed w/o a hitch.

Coretemp, Realtemp apparently won't give ANY readings on an APU. Tried a few youtube videos, getting random lockups about 5 or so minutes in. Not BSODs, just garbled screen garbage and buzzing. I"m guessing temp related, but running memtest on it now to rule that out.

Also, front usb3 ports not working, gotta figure out later whether that is case or mobo header related.

          ain't pc building entertaining?

My dream job would be to come into work @ 7A, read the company e-mail for the first ~15 minutes of my shift, then proceed to pickup my build list and start assembling units for client's that I'll never have to see or interact with, and test each build once it's assembled.

That would be an amazing job.

              or a frustrating day off!!!

Forgot to post this, FWIW, but I've read so much about HWmonitor not being accurate

              so IDK

Well for you folks playing along at home...

Memtest86 didn't catch any errors in a 90 minute run.

tried AIDA64, gave similar temps to HWMonitor, idle temps around 27 or 28C. Tried skyrim, ran it thru the end of the Helgen scene. temps never got above 42C.

The AIDA64 system stability test loaded cpu and memory 99%, temp reading climbed up to 47C and leveled off....ran it for about 45 minutes wi/o issue.

so apparently it isn't a cooling issue, it's a uefi or mobo sensor issue giving false readings and some soft or unrelated software issue with youtube.

gonna make a seperate thread in the HW forum about that, but if there's anyone with a Kaveri/ASRock build, can you post your temps here?

You still on the stock HSF? It should not move around.... recheck it's latched on properly, tweak the retention clamps to see if you can get it a little snugger.

I removed it, cleaned everything and reapplied it with some arctic silver. AIDA 64 reporting idle temps in upper 20s, full on load still appears to max about 47C. Haven't tried moving it this time b/c of reading some horror stories about moving the processor in the socket (bent pins, etc).

Seems solid now. I realized I had not installed flash, which may or may not have been the youtube problem. Been installing, benchmarking, testing all day, no crashes.

I'm derailing my own thread, but memory wouldn't go over 1600mhz with the xmp setting at "auto", tried several things, it wouldn't even boot....I finally thought of updating the BIOS (it was version 2.00, latest is 2.90) and that did it, 2133mhz 9-11-11. For the benefit of anyone reading this with the same mobo/apu, it's worth noting that the asrock website does not mention any change in memory speed supported in it's descriptions of its BIOS revisions, which is why I didn't try it sooner.

(except for the nonfunctional front usb which i am overlooking for now)
