Eyefinity6 Enhancements

Based on the Evergreen series flagship Cypress GPU, the AMD ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 2GB edition differs in subtle but important ways from the vanilla, but hardly ordinary, HD 5870. Gone are the common outputs, replaced with six mini-display port outputs in a single row. Mini-DisplayPort is used to save space on the rear of the card - full size DisplayPort outputs would be unworkable - and also increases cooling capability of the card. The reference heatsink design of the HD 5870 was puported to capable of cooling a 300W load, far more than the 188W of the regular 1GB HD 5870. Due to the higher power needs of the 2GB equipped HD 5870 and the extra load generated by powering a 12 megapixel display, the power input has been upgraded from two 6-pin PCIe power connectors to one 8-pin and one 6-pin.

Retail Package

Sapphire's retail package for the ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 2GB edition is simple, in a stylish large box. The card itself is well packaged and protected using an ESD-safe bubble wrap bag, in a form fitted crush resistant tray. A separate small box holds the accessories, with the usual standard driver CD and case badge

Two power adapters are included: a single long 4-pin to 6-pin adapter and a short dual 4-pin to 8-pin power connector. If you have a PSU that lacks enough PCIe power connectors to support your HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 edition, double check you've got sufficient quality and amperage before going too much further. If you forget to connect the power connectors, the card will immediately emit a high pitched loud warning tone when you power on your PC.

A short flexible crossfire connector is included, as well as five passive mini-DisplayPort adapters. One to HDMI, two to full size DisplayPort, and two to single-link DVI. Use of any two 'standard' digital outputs at one time is permitted, although you can have all three (HDMI + DVI + DVI) connected at once. The HD 5870 e6 allows more than two displays only via DisplayPort output. An active DisplayPort adapter is required to add additional 'legacy' connected displays. These adapters are powered typically by USB and add the timing signals required by DVI or HDMI.
