ATi HD3870X2

With Gears of War, we've finished the DX10 games evaluation of this series and the experience is something of a mixed bag:

  • We achieved good performance in: Call of Juarez DX10, Company of Heroes DX10, Bioshock DX10, and, with some indulgence, World in Conflict DX10 (this last one though is nearer to the medium performance group). These are also the games that scale the best, with all others experiencing limited or no scaling to QuadCF

  • We achieved medium performance in: Hellgate DX10 with a single X2, and Crysis  DX10 up to 1024x768 with Very High settings or 1920x1200 with Medium settings (yuck)

  • We achieved poor performance in: Hellgate DX10 with a dual X2s, Crysis DX10 in all of the other testing scenarios (although the game is as much to blame as the hardware, in my humble opinion) and Lost Planet DX10

  • We got absolutely horrid performance in: Gears of War through its DX10 path (although given the performance of the DX9 path, pinning the poor performance on the game itself isn't out of the realm of reason)

With this we wrap up Part I of our HD3870X2 CrossfireX review. Be sure to come back again for Part II, where we take a look at how AA and AF work with the HD3870X2, and stress the card thoroughly with DX9 titles.
