The 6-series of cards are all built on some variation of the NV40 graphics core. This core, as mentioned, was first introduced about two years ago and has since gone through quite a few revisions.

The most powerful is the NV45, a 222 million transistor core that was originally built for NVIDIA by IBM. Technically the NV45 is a native AGP core, but with the use of NVIDIA’s high-speed bridge is able to support the PCI-Express architecture.
