Redwood Core Architecture

Architecturally identical to the Redwood core featured in the HD 5670, AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5570 features a 627 million transistor core manufactured by TSMC on a 40nm process. The TeraScale 2 architecture first seen in the HD 5870 Cypress core powers up to five SIMD units at 650MHz, a reduction of 125MHz from its big brother HD 5670.

The use of 900MHz DDR3 in the HD 5570 reduces memory data rate from the stellar 4Gbps of the HD 5670 to 1.8Gbps, and reduces memory bandwidth accordingly. The HD 5570's 28.8GB/s bandwidth is less than half of the HD 5670's 64GB/s.

Similarly the engine clock reduction lowers pixel fillrate and Z/Stencil performance, all in the name of power and space savings.

The flexibility of the design specifications given to AMD's add-in board (AIB) partners allows them to tailor the HD 5570 to their needs. Lower clocked, slower RAM may be included to reduce price, and lower specified cores might introduce a HD 5550 or HD 5530. The full 400 Stream Processors included in the Redwood core powering the HD 5570 should allow top quality HTPC playback, including Adaptive Vector Deinterlace - this is a Vision Premium graphics branded card, after all.

The reference design is half-height and single slot cooled, featuring AMD's ATI Eyefinity for productivity and gaming. On card are two digital outputs, a dual-link DVI output and a DisplayPort output, as well as a standard VGA output connected to the board via header. We expect AIB partners to include a DVI to HDMI adapter and a low profile backplane header to switch out, moving the VGA output to a second backplane cover if needed, as was seen for the HD 5450.

In terms of performance per watt, the HD 5570 is a major increase over not only last generation's HD 4650 but NVIDIA's current generation cards. The strong single precision compute performance, 520 GFLOPS, is in fact higher than the HD 3870 and GeForce 8800 GTX. DirectX 11 Direct Compute and OpenCL will combine in ATI STREAM technology to leverage this power for day to day tasks. Windows 7's native drag'n'drop transcode operations to send music to Windows Media Foundation compliant devices are seamlessly accelerated by AMD's Drag'n'Drop driver, Cyberlink's suite of applications are ATI STREAM accelerated for decode and encode operations via ATI AVIVO, and Adobe's Flash Player (beta) can be hardware accelerated to reduce CPU usage and increase quality.
