Intel Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) today announced a comprehensive agreement to end all outstanding legal disputes between the companies, including antitrust litigation and patent cross license disputes.

In a joint statement the two companies commented, "While the relationship between the two companies has been difficult in the past, this agreement ends the legal disputes and enables the companies to focus all of our efforts on product innovation and development."

Under terms of the agreement, AMD and Intel obtain patent rights from a new 5-year cross license agreement, Intel and AMD will give up any claims of breach from the previous license agreement, and Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion. Intel has also agreed to abide by a set of business practice provisions. As a result, AMD will drop all pending litigation including the case in U.S. District Court in Delaware and two cases pending in Japan. AMD will also withdraw all of its regulatory complaints worldwide. The agreement will be made public in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Noice! Yay for the little guy!

The sad part is that this won't shut up the people who think Intel never did anything wrong and that AMD "just couldn't compete."

Wow! AMD really made out in that deal.

Here is another good article on the subject, by the way.

Yes & no. $1.25bn sounds like a lot, until you consider how much AMD lost, monetarily as well as in market & mind share, due to Intel's business practices. As well as how Intel was able to capitalize on the advantages the tactics created.

Even so, I still see it as a big win for AMD. The matter about GLOBALFOUNDRIES and the fabs is finally settled, Intel's anti-competitive business against them will hopefully stop at least somewhat, and to boot, they walk away with some cash that they did not have before the settlement.

The win was not the cash, but the business practice agreement and the dropping of litigation against GF, as well as the 5 year cross-licensing agreement.

AMD could have got more from persuing the matter legally, but it would have cost more and taken a lot, lot longer, during which all the other trials would be ongoing and troublesome, too.

AMD's need to execute their vision now, if they want to really expand and accelerate into domination.

I agree that it is a big win, I'm simply saying that the agreement doesn't unwind the clock, or the damage Intel's practices caused to both AMD as well as the entire industry ... and customers.

If the rumor I heard is true we wont.. Word is that a new series of i5s will be coming out that will be around the $130 mark. Less cache but faster clock speeds.

IF this is true AMD will be in for a serious fight in the budget market.
