Intel has lifted the wraps on their Core 2 Duo CPU, and boy does it ever impress. Consider that a $220 Core 2 Duo E6400 runing at 2.13GHz keeps pace with a $1000 Athlon FX-62 running at 2.8GHz, then that the flagship Core 2 Duo X6800 runs 2.93GHz, and you will begin to understand what the hype surrounding the Core 2 Duo has been about. Here is a list of some of the reviews that have already appeared online:

I am glad I waited, but I am gonna wait a little more, need to see how 65nm AM2 perform in anti-hyperthreading fashion before I make up my mind. I'll make do my XP-M@2.5GHz during the mean time. |

Conroe is going to be top until AMD releases its 65nm processors then... you will want to kiss Intel goodbye ... IMO. |

Whats with all the intel bashing people do. Intel realized they made a mistake with the P4 and so they worked their asses off to release the most powerful CPU on the market and people still give them crap. If AMD has something they better show it fast cause time is running out on them to get something out. AM2 looks to be just a minor upgrade. Looks like intel will have the rest of 2006 and a lot of 2007 unless AMD pulls of a miracle. |

Intel is back, finally. the new Core 2 processors give amazing performance with a pricetag low enough to justify jumping back to intel platform. ![]()

Wonder if a12tic will finally stop calling it "hype"? So, when will we be able to purchase this along with a mobo at places like the Egg? |

big w00t for me come 2007. A way faster PC for "cheap". In tech terms that means "a uber PC now that will be bogged down by the OS in the future that will still cost you lots". an intel based system for me though, haven't had one since dem P200 thingies.

The fab was designed in Isreal; it's a no-wonder the Conroe nukes the competition, heheh. I've had intel cpus over 20 years, and once again, after p3 architecture ruled, and the current tech, with p3 design, it once again rules. ![]()

![]() Anyway. AMD is gonna feel this. I congradulate AMD though on a few years of dominance that has really put them on the map. Since the release of the A64 family, Intel has felt the burn. And for a year or more AMD has out sold the giant Intel machine. kudos! But I am happy to see competition heat up once again with a knock out punch from Intel. The market needed it. Now to wait for a few months for the pricing to sort itself out. Can you imagine if AMD answers by lowering the X2 4600+ or even X2 5000's to under $300 US! Then it would be even better. No need to get rid of mobo and RAM and all that. ![]() Ulinkely? Who knows. But if it were so. I for one would not be ashamed to own an X2 4600+ or X2 5000+ in the face of the mainstream Intel chips while sparing the cost of a complete overhaul again. ![]() Better yet. FX-62 for under $400 would be even sweeter! C.

Edit: according to Hannibal, the RHT rumors started less than a month ago, which is simply not true. Also, L'Inq's report about RHT presenting a multi-core CPU to the OS as a single-core is inaccurate. I've already detailed how RHT works in the RHT thread in the rumor mill. Hannibal's wrong on this one, and so is Fraud. Hannibal never should've lumped himself in with the likes of Fraud, especially without doing his homework first ![]() Back on topic: I just hope Tyan or Iwill or the like releases a dual socket Woodcrest mobo based on RD600, or somehow makes the board Crossfire capable. Dual Woody 5160 (3GHz, 4MB L2, 1.33GHz FSB) FTW!

One of the reviews has the 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo overclocked to 3.0Ghz at stock vcore and using air cooling ![]() I wish I was folding right now with one... I hope AMD can bring something to the table to compete with Intel. The X2's are a good CPU, there's no doubt about that but it doesn't really make sense for anyone looking to upgrade or buy a new machine to go with a lower performing chip. Unfortunately AMD's roadmap seems to be vague and stretched out. I don't think AM2 will be the answer they're looking for and I'm quite worried about the whole "4x4" idea. It won't be cost effective for most people and again a similar Core 2 setup (if possible) would be the more desirable option anyway. Hell, even a single Core 2 setup would be more desirable for many. They will need to push new core's and AM3 forward I expect. I don't think they should even have mentioned AM3 yet, as it just puts people off upgrading knowing that AM2 is barely out the door and another socket change is round the corner (despite it's backward compatibility). |

For the record, 4mb's of cache and viiv technology, will sustain itself longer than ANY current solution; this being the Core 2 DUOs above E6400. Any upgrades now, with any AMD chip, will result in backwards movement. Oh, it's nice to know that the multipliers are unlocked as well, so you can fiddle with the timings..It's a relief that Intel has, once again, delivered a fearsome product towards the competition.. Damn well, took long enough.. The roadmap is clear now, Intel will dominate, once again..

Any word on secret DRM stuff built into this chip? Just curious, since nobody had asked that question yet. I'd be all over these if I hadn't gone AM2 a couple months ago, but I won't be upgrading again until next summer, so I'll wait and see what AMD's response to all this is, if it exists. For now I'll just be glad I got DDR2 and PCI-E versus my RDRAM and AGP4x from 3 months ago. Things must be very sober right now at the AMD offices. |
