Default Hello ALL! Please help a newbee with a Firegl X1

Hello all. I am new to the rage 3d forum and I am using one of my students logins. I teach computer animation at the Illinios Institute Of Art Chicago. I am seeking help from you guys because you seem to know a lot!

My problem is we have all workstations with ATI Firegl X1's in them. I am looking for a driver that will enable DX9. I would like to demo some of the Radeon 9700 demos for my class. ATI's web forum says that the firegl X1 DX9 driver will be out soon but I would rather not wait because the summer is almost here! The person I e-mailed did informally tell me that a beta was floating around but would not tell me where to get it. Have any of you seen this driver? Or can any of you please help me with this problem? I currently have the 1036 driver and still no DX9 support.

Again, any help would be great and thank you all. I know that hard core ATI modders like yourselves can help.

In return I will run any tests on the fireGL's you would like and I will post results. We have 42 128mb versions and 12 256 AGP pro versions and I will gladely benchmark (3dmark 2001, sandra, lightwave test) any of them for you guys because the cards are expensive and I sure your wondering how they do in games.

Thank you ALL and I hope you can help me.

Driver development supporting DX9 is critical for this card and as such I'm surprised ATI hasn't delivered on it's promises.

A DX9 hardware compliant workstation class card crippled thanks to its DX8 enabled driverset.

On a different note.

Have any other X1-128 owners experienced framerate jerks with the default installation settings?

Whether it's in a 3D application or a 3D game, any 3D acceleration (either D3D or openGL) is pausing once per second . I have tested this using the last three driver revisions and by duplicating same problem on a secondary machine.

However, lowering the hardware acceleration tab in display properties down one notch (disabling cursor and bitmap acceleration) fixes the problem. Hardly an ideal solution.

If only some ATI driver developer were to stop by!

The solution was already here on Rage3D

Simply get the file ati3duag.dl_ from the 3.0a Catalyst drivers and insert and overwrite the existing file in the latest 1036 beta X1 drivers.

Install the modified driverset - reboot and smile, your cards DX9 featureset is finally activated.

Every ATI demo has worked flawlessly as has 3dmark 2k3. Nice to see the DX9 features of the card finally in action. Hopefully ATI will release DX9 compliant official drivers soon.

But alas, the Nvidia dawn demo using the OpenGL wrapper refuses to launch.

I'll just continue on instead of a new thread. It's probably old news for many but for viper3344's benefit, I have successfully installed the 3.4 Catalyst drivers on my X1-128 FireGL.

All I did was to extract the latest 3.4 Catalyst drivers, load up their .inf's and under section "[ATI.Mfg]" add support for the X1-128 card. I chose to replace the "RADEON 9700 PRO". I did so by taking the info from the 1036 FireGL driver .inf and replace the vendor info as stated below:

"RADEON 9700 PRO" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E47&SUBSYS_01721002
"RADEON 9700 PRO - Secondary" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E67&SUBSYS_01731002

Note the DeviceID.

For the 256 meg version of the X1 it would be a case of altering it to:

"RADEON 9700 PRO" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E47&SUBSYS_01521002
"RADEON 9700 PRO - Secondary" = ati2mtag_R300, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4E67&SUBSYS_01531002

Note that they can only be installed manually through device manager and not through the Catalyst setup program. In this case the card will identified as a "RADEON 9700 PRO"

Verdict ? With the Catalyst's installed, full DX9 support. DirectX games have improved immensely but OpenGL based games titles and 3D applications have been crippled performance wise compared to their state with FireGL drivers installed.

I truly do believe that little differs between an X1-128 FireGL and a standard 9700 other than the drivers. There really isn't any reason (aside from making more cash through questionable means) ATI should sell one as a "Pro" card the other as a gamers card. Wouldn't it be great if they decided to include the OpenGL performance optimisations that FireGL users enjoy into the next revision of the Catalyst drivers for the masses to enjoy ?

Talking

Well - with a bit more fiddling I have now successfully modified the 3.4 Catalyst drivers to run through their setup and install drivers for the ATI FireGL 128 X1 card correctly.

As I am in WindowsXP and only wish for FireGL X1 card support, I altered files INSTALL.INI and CX_08946.INI under the [WINXP] section and changed the original bulk card support from:

[WINXP]

DriverPath_R6=\2KXP_INF,CX_08946.INF

To a reduced one card supported one:

[WINXP]
Label=R6
R6=DriverPath_R6,0x4E47:0x01721002
DriverPath_R6=\2KXP_INF,CX_08946.INF

(0x4E47 being DeviceID and 0x01721002 the SubsystemID + SubsytemVendorID)

When setup is now run, the only card that is supported is in fact the X1. The added benefit is that now the SmartGart service is installed and functional. In fact, everything seems to be functional which, as far as I'm concerned, is the final nail in the coffin for the 9700 vs X1 128 specs debate.

I entirely agree with the findings found on http://www.nvworld.ru/docs/sfgl_e.html - an excellent read btw

Roll on the 3.5 Catalysts

i do not know if you have tried this but when i DO NOT install the ATI CP(Control Panel) i get better performance in everything. DOnt know if the FireGL cards use a CP but u may give it a try.

As for changing the values for Dx and OpenGL AF,FSAA etc you can use RadTools, or Rage3d Tweak.

It might also be my idea and not a real performance gain but you could giver it a try.

I went to all the above steps because there isn't any official support for DirectX 9 whatsoever for this graphics card.

It's kind of ironic what with it being advertised as being fully DirectX9 compliant - which it is, just it's not so in the driver department.

Using the control panel for the Catalyst drivers with the FireGL drivers was a hit and miss experience for me as well. Some programs seemed quicker, while others not. Leaving it alone offered the best all round performance.

I wasn't planning on keeping these modified drivers running but DirectX progs are much faster so I think I'll just wait till official DirectX9 drivers appear

Oh and as an added bonus, with these drivers installed - this is now possible. Though for the hype spun about that GeForce FX demo, I think ATI's chimp is much more impressive
