Default Simneighborhood 5

This place is a blackhole of Simcity talk...

Soooo.... today's beta 2 was a horrid start. A 24hour beta in which no one could start a city for over half of it.
And now that I've gotten through an hour of play I can say I am most disappointed .
My wife is an avid Sims 1,2,3 and Simcity 4 player and she immediately called this a Sims knockoff. A "Sims with buildings" as she put it. I never felt like I was doing anything more than being told what to do next with steady thought bubbles from around the city. Money management and real problem solving + compromises are non-existent. At 680 population I was making $1400 per game hour. The game is plain easy.

I thought I would be ok with the single density zoning based on street size, but in practice it is irritating.

Most of all, despite many peoples attempts at being ok with it and appeasing others, the tiny city size is not good. Not good at all. It seems very apparent the zoom out is restricted just to make the town feel bigger. And seeing skyscrapers in what looks like should be 5k population towns is absolutely weird. Talking like 10-12 streets wide. For the whole 'city'.

In short.. my wife is convinced this games sole purpose is to integrate with Sims 4 in the future, and I am in no way still interested

I feel the same way. Since so many of the past titles' challenging, even tedious aspects have been removed, it's nearly overly simplified. I really do like the tilt-shift photography visual style, however, and the engine seems to perform well enough maxed out even with my ever-aging HD 5870. I'm anxious to see how both critic and user reviews will turn out for this game.

Its not too bad but there are a lot of things that you cant unlock and the time limit doesnt help. I made a little town just to see what its all about.

Closed beta tonight. Allegedly it's unlocked so there's no limit on what you can build this time. The open beta had a lot of stuff pulled out. Unfortunately there's no way to pre-download the client so once it opens at 5pm PST you have until 9pm PST to download the client and play the game.

Email invite...

Quote:
Calling all Mayors! We are stress testing our servers before the game launches on March 5. We need volunteers to play the game to help us with this test. New to this beta, you can now play a 4 hour portion of the game, giving you access to more game play.
This Closed Beta is hilariously awesome. Basically a bunch of Closed Beta invites go out. At 4:30pm PST they sent out codes. Everyone downloaded the client. At 5:00pm they could login. Click on "Claim City" and get a message saying "Cannot claim city."

Then EA posts...

Quote:
Heads up, Mayors -- the #SimCityBeta servers are currently closed. Phase 1 of our test is complete and our next phase starts at 6pm PST.
... so apparently EA is trolling us. We get to "Play" one piece at a time in their schedule while they "test" things such as our patience. No one can actually play or connect to anything yet.

Actually once they turned the servers back on it got good. Works great now. Lots of fun. Definite day 1 buy here.

Looks like this one is more about instant gratification. Draw in a zone and a few seconds later people or businesses are already moving in. It may not have the huge scale of the last games, but at least you can get to the nice fancy buildings without struggling too much.

It looks like the emphasis this time is on being able to manage & upgrade the buildings and stuff rather than everything being zone and forget.

From what I've watched, some of the changes are pretty neat. Not being tile based but then having helper lines and snap-to points seem to make the interface easy but significantly more flexible and believable looking for a city layout. The upgrade system for buildings seems to be really nice, and the bus stops for schools and things are a good idea too.

That said, even the largest maps in SimCity 4 seemed too small for m;, it really is sized more to a neighborhood or district of a city. Since you can't build "cities" in directly adjacent tiles, you can't really extend it properly either.

There does seem to be some hand holding too... having little achievement things that give you extra money is fine in a single player tutorial or early on campaign, but in a multiplayer sandbox game, having little tiny milestones that reward you with money takes much of the skill out of it. Hopefully what has been released in the beta is one game mode or one style and that there are options for a pure sandbox city builder with large maps. I can still hope, can't I

If you pre-ordered on Amazon check and make sure your order still exists. Many people have had them deleted, mine included. Some people have even been lucky enough to get an additional "we're sorry" discount on top of the CAGROCKS one.

Game comes out in less than 24 hours and there is still no pre-load. Servers are gonna be HORRID. Does anyone have an official "launch time" ? 12 PST? 12 EST? 9AM EST?

ya not happy about any of that, well if just origin only that wouldnt bother me much. Im hoping that the beta they did had stuff cut from the final or it could be a bit disappointing.

Hmm, I'm kinda interested but not $60 bucks interested. I'd need more info as to why I should buy from Shrike or someone.

I'll be doing my best to get logged in tonight at midnight or whenever it releases. Though I probably won't be able to get any serious time in with it until Tuesday night I'm guessing. I'll let you guys know what I think when I do. I'm nervous that they've gone too far from the SimCity 4 formula that I loved. The limited map sizes and other design choices make me think maybe they overly sacrificed modeling a "city" in favor of modeling individual sim behaviors (which I really don't care about).

We'll see...

The limited map sizes and other design choices make me think maybe they overly sacrificed modeling a "city" in favor of modeling individual sim behaviors (which I really don't care about).

Ya why break the sucessful sc4 formula? Is it ea trying to make the game appeal to everyone?

From watching videos I feel like theres a whole lot more to actually manage now.

As for map sizes... well I'd put money on them releasing an expansion pack that makes them bigger, then another one to make them bigger yet... and another... and another... This is the EA/Maxis model, we know.

I went back and played a tiny bit of SC4 and it felt really clunky to me. I like how the mapping works in this a whole lot more. Obviously 10+ years will do a lot.

I watched a few developer interviews and I can understand and appreciate where they're coming from. Something they talked about was this GlassBox engine that powers SimCity 5. It's basically a ground-up engine for modeling individual actor/resource behaviors that would culminate in presenting an accurate model and simulation of city behaviors. It's really ambitious and I can see how it would have taken a number of years before the modern home PC would afford enough power to manage something like this. Something they've repeated frequently is that this isn't a top-down view of a city where patterns are replicated based on macro scale patterns, but rather a micro oriented simulation.

Basically if you see traffic in your city, it shouldn't be because the game decided there should be traffic in a certain area and then simulate that. But rather traffic should be caused because a thousand separate discrete units and actors all decided they needed to go somewhere and the location of the traffic jam was simply a result of the road/path available to get there coinciding with others needing to take the same route. Same thing that happens at 5pm in most major cities. The city isn't creating traffic, the thousands of individual actors are.

I can really see and appreciate what they're trying to do here. SimCity 5 is the showcase for this new GlassBox engine which, I guess, probably needs another iteration or so before it's really gonna be something we can appreciate in all its glory. Imagine what a ground-up simulation engine could do for a game like Total War?

I suspect city size was limited to cull a certain scale of problems that crop up when you're simulating LARGE amounts of individual actors and resources in this new engine. Beyond a certain size, maybe they felt it was becoming unmanageable or they couldn't negotiate performance concerns adequately. If they refine the engine (hopefully using that always-on connection that provides client event data that can be aggregated, analyzed, and iterated on) then I expect we can see a DLC or full-fledged expansion that would truly give us the "city" simulator we're all jones'ing for.
