Monitor Eyefinity, Crossfire, and more than 6 monitors

I have an asymmetrical 6-monitor setup which I use with my HD6950 Crossfire video cards:

The biggest shortcoming with it is that it does not support Eyefinity as the lower row is a 20-30-20 PLP setup. I want to add 6 more monitors (24" 1920x1200) in a 3x2 configuration so I can use Eyefinity for certain games such as racing and flight sims. I am building custom monitor mounts for the 3x2 monitors so while I'm waiting I have set up 5 of the monitors in a 5x1 portrait configuration:

I am having some severe configuration problems with this setup. I don't have nearly enough video outputs that are not part of the Crossfire that I can plug in all the monitors into, so I am fully aware that whenever I turn on Crossfire I will lose all the monitors plugged into the non-primary card. I have an ASUS EAH6950 DCUII so I can plug in all six monitors of the planned Eyefinity group into the primary card. My problem is that while I can create the Eyefinity group whenever I turn off Crossfire and/or disable the Eyefinity group the video configuration does *NOT* turn back to the pre-Eyefinity layout. I have been trying presets and discovered they don't automatically enable/disable Crossfire to match the profile. Worse, CCC eventually breaks down by showing only a white/transparent screen with no visible text. The buttons are there as I know from experience the locations and they react to mouse clicks. By unplugging the Eyefinity monitors I am able to get everything working again, including CCC *WITHOUT* having to reload/repair the software/drivers.

Is this related to Windows limited to controlling 10 monitors in a single computer? Windows 7 can actually see the other monitors over 10 but identifying/controlling them can be problematic. I use Ultramon (which can control more than 10 monitors) but I found it interfering with CCC so I uninstalled it.

Another possibility is that Eyefinity doesn't like extended monitors that are not plugged into the primary card. Is anyone out there using Eyefinity and extended monitors with a multiple video adapter setup? I'd like to know if it's just me or is CCC not ready to deal with large monitor setups.

Finally, could it be that Eyefinity can handle Crossfire either on or off but not switching on a regular basis? Is anyone using Eyefinity/Crossfire with monitors plugged into the non-primary card?

Thanks in advance!

3x2 isn't a great config for gaming, double thick bezels in the middle of everything. 5x1 is a much better config. I've used both, I go with 5x1.

eyefinity groups and crossfire is tough, I've found you have to go from one config to single display profile then to another multi display config, that should carry your crossfire settings with it.

Just an update:

I have been using the new 12.9 beta driver and CCC and it is making a big difference in reliability. While I still cannot switch between Crossfire on and off in presets, it is reliably creating the Eyefinity groups and extended desktops and more importantly remembering them. I no longer have any crashes or freezes of CCC, although it is still a bit slow (but livable).
