As I said in the other thread I still haven't preordered Grim Dawn and thats from the same people who developed a game that I know and love on the same engine.

This will work for a short time but you will get a couple of scam artists that will rip people off and give them nothing and ruin this for everyone.

Kickstarter funded gaming is the new episodic gaming.

There will be one, maybe two, groups that will really get it and succeed and everyone else will go back to getting bent over the barrel by publishers.

Not really. Kickstarter is no guarantee of any product or result. You are giving money of your own volition to something you think deserves it cognizant of possible failure.

Indeed. It'll be successful if people pay attention to which folks are making the games. Great if you're an established game developer with a fanbase already, aka Grim Fandango and the like, but it's going to be a real hit-and-miss affair for new kids on the block.

(the NKOTBs will probably have to have made something out of their own pocket to demo to folks before even considering kickstarter... and even then there's still no promise of an end product. It's kind of like religion, really.)

Kickstarter is only for US residents ...
which makes it unreachable for quite massive amount of indies

absence of EU / Japan / Canada/ Australia support is puzzling in world wide economy times ...

I'd definitely help fund a Planescape like project.
But I guess that's just wishful thinking...

On the contrary. I've pledged $30 on Double Fine Adventure, and some other projects, and I'm a swede.
As long as you have an account at Amazon (amazon.com or amazon.co.uk ...), it shouldn't be a problem ...

I think the lack of other regions is down to regional laws.

For example as I live in the UK I couldn't legally get funding via this method to make a game due to laws in place here. (I forget the details but basically you can't).

The UK games industry representative group has started to make noise about getting the laws changed to allow it but given how well their appeal for tax breaks went I'm not holding my breath...
(Despite making a lot of money for them the various UK goverments seem to hate the games industry.. I guess they'll be happy once it has gone over to Canada...)

I would throw some money for someone to make Freespace 3. THQ is going down the tubes, perhaps the developers of Volition can start up a new developing company and use Kickstarter to make Freespace 3

platforms - pc/mac/linux/ios and possibly android
languages - english/french/italian/german/spanish

the game beta will be on steam but there will also be a drm free version on release.

the project has earned 1.8 million dollars now.

I'm pretty sure Derek Smart owns the Freespace rights these days and as much as I'd love to see a Freespace 3 if it turned out he was making it I'd take it upon myself to finish what the Shivans started and blow up our sun to stop it coming into being...

Nope, he never bought the license. He was going to, but decided to stop pursuing it. Interplay still hold the license. I'm sure if someone wanted to buy it from them, they'll probably sell it for cheap by now

Yeah, I just read that stuff. Too bad really ... though I guess they'll change it, sooner or later ...
Anyway, there're some other crowd funding sites that you may use, if you need money for a project, for instance:

Except many games of the 80s are still good games today, in many ways. So I'm pretty sure that if they code a game to their strengths, it'd be good.

Making a game today is much more than it was back in the 80s or even 90s.
