Default The giant failure that was Red Orchestra 2

Well, it seems that just months after launch RO2 is pretty much a ghost town. A game that supports 64 person servers is lucky to have a single server with 40+ people world-wide at any given time.

What killed it? The pathetic, broken launch? The small number of maps? The lack of worthy tank play? The fact that some of the maps are SO bad that they clear a server? The persisting bugs? The lag?

Sad story... I can't remember being more excited for a game to come out and it dropped the ball. It's not a HORRIBLE game, but it's not what it should have been and surely not with the wait.

It's been months since I played it so I might have already forgotten some of its downfalls, but these were the things that hurt it for me:
- Crap performance
- Forgettable maps
- Awkward cover system
- No vehicles other than tanks

I wanted to pick it up on launch but didn't have the monies. Sadly, from what I've heard it seems like there isn't much reason to grab it now.

A while ago I had read that there was going to be a free weekend but I don't recall that ever actually happening. If they've sufficiently patched the game by now it might help out player numbers—temporarily if nothing else.

The performance issues destroyed it IMO. They were so bad for so long. It also catered to casuals and a lot of the hardcore RO players just went back to playing RO.

this was the reason as far as i'm concerned. the company had a reputation for being pc gamer friendly and yet they went ahead and deliberately released an incomplete, broken game with no regard for the people who actually supported them by buying it.

well the game is playable for me now ...

at least performance is ok even on medium DX11 capable computer

i still think the main downfall of the game is lack of more maps (i expected at least 3 more infantry, 2 more combined and 1 more tank)

it's sad to say but i think they put too much effort to microdetails (fully fledged tank interiors) instead the game overall

ofcourse this all may change with free maps update and now with release of SDK for mod makers

Yeh the game runs fine for me now, most bugs seem to have been squashed and in all honesty its not a bad game, but its too late, they had their chance to impress before BF3 and failed.. plus it needs more maps badly.. I havent reinstalled it on my new rig yet, think I might have a game tonight.

Modders are the only hope for this game really.. unless they release 40 new maps or something.

Yeah, I'm not sure what was wrong with this one. I loved the first one a lot, but maybe this time it just wasn't enough that was new? The broken stats etc... at the beginning was a pain, and then the reset was frustrating, but I mostly stopped playing because other games managed to balance 'realism' with 'fun gameplay' better than Red Orchestra. Part of me thinking I should keep playing it, and I had enough fun with it, but for something that was supposed to be a big improvement on the first, I just didn't get enough to make me feel I was playing a new game.

I think the poor performance and lack of features at launch did the most damage. Then with the combined release of BF3 and MW it was just completely overshadowed.

Wolfenstein.

There was a community just as large as Battlefield, Counter Strike and others waiting on that titles multiplayer, and it fell right on its face.

Battlefield 3 is a perfect example of developer really working hard to keep its communities in tact with a proper sequeled title.

iD did a horrible job.

Don't blame id for that, blame the unknown studio that developed the multiplayer.

Or raven/activision.

raven did the single player side of wolfenstein and that was a solid game in it's own right. the blame for the failure of the game does not lie on their shoulders. point the finger at activision which never properly promoted the game and whatever studio made the bland multiplayer.

What killed RO2 for me, was Battlefield 3 being released shortly after. Switched to that, didn't like BF3 much, never went back to RO2, stuck on Skyrim now. Skyrim skyrim skyrim.

Red Orchestra was a big fail because they forgot what made RO good... content.

They went for graphics whoring and without a big budget you can't do much.

Too bad they couldn't have waited a few months and polished it a bit while all the big titles were released. I'm guessing since Tripwire is still a smaller dev, they couldn't wait any longer and had to get it out.

Tried to play it again, theres just too many HORRIBLE maps in that SMALL map rotation. Had to quit... loved RO1, HATE RO2.

i tried to complete the sp training but keep getting stuck on different bugs where the mission doesnt progress, annoying as i always like to do the training to see if i miss something.

Too few maps, real players and again team work, plus a realistic fps where you are still a floating blob, how to completly ruin it for me.

Buggy release + terrible launch window. Let's compete with Skyrim, BF3, MW3, and TOR for gamers wallets.

Look down, magical floating beast that holds a gun, i like to be able to feel part of the character i.e. have more than a gun in front but legs too which makes the scenery im stuck on make sense... even bf3 has amazing feeling for the character in game.
