Default Quietest economy car?

Most small cars are buzzy and tinny, which out there gives you the closest thing to Lincoln Towncar quietness on the freeway?

Does not have to be a new car since used is what I'm looking for anyway.

Acura TL would be a solid choice. If thats economy enough for you.

Well, Lexus LS is often called Corolla of Santa Barbara.

Its damn economy with only 8 cylinders, especially if you go for the $120k hybrid variant, it will do 30mpg.

And it comes with optional laminated glass windows, so it is damn quiet.

Toyota Corolla IMO. I generally find Toyotas quieter than other Asian cars in the same price category. In general I think Toyotas are designed for an older more conservative demographic wanting a quieter car.

If I had to drive a Corolla, I would immediately crash it into a tree, so that I wouldn't have to drive it anymore.

I sound deadened by Civic. People often comment how quiet it is. The stereo (w/ 1200W, single 10" sub) sounds incredible.

I recommend eDead v2, then v4 Teklite on all the sheet metal on the firewall, floor, and doors.

Well worth the $300 in supplies and a weekend of work.

Yaris is pretty quiet at 100kms/hr. Anythin over 115 and it gets buzzy and windy sounding. My new tires might help though.

Honda Fit is reasonably quiet at 100. Never went over that in one. I wish I had got one of these instead of the Yaris due to the practicality. I could probably stave off needing a bigger vehicle for a couple of years if I had a Fit.

When I think of 'Economy Car' I think of Econobox......something small, something with a weak puny engine, something with insanely good gas mileage...somthing usually sounding like a tin can.

I think the whole Lincoln Town Car mention threw everyone of...thinking he wants a economical luxury car.....

What i get from the post is that he wants a economy car that is as close to quiet as that of a lincoln town car.

best thing to do, as all econo cars have low levels of sound proofing, is to get one and add more to it... if you do a lot of driving its worth it. Also tire noise is huge, so change of tires can have a big impact.

I second the Yaris. Rather impressed with the lack of noise even on the rough roads I drive.

But nothing compares to a Maybach. That's a little pricey though.

When I use to get car mags years ago, they did interior sound test at freeway and idle speeds. Don't car mags do this anymore?

Doesn't have to be a total econo box like the Fit or SMART. But just wondering if there is anything small that delivers supreme levels of quietness. I'd pay an extra 2k for am econobox that was stupid silent.

For Asian cars, the Civic is one of the best, if not the best, in terms of "quiet" economy (which is a bit of an oxymoron).

You're better off going with a used mid-priced sedan, such as the Accord or Camry if you want quiet. But even those aren't that "quiet".

Tire choice has an impact on road noise - replace any car's tires with some low-noise tires and you'll be happier (though typically low-noise = low performance). Wind noise - look for cars with a lower drag coefficient, though that's only a starting point since materials used in the shell of the car also have an impact (which is why Dynamat etc. can help most any car as well). Sedans are usually quieter than wagons or SUVs since the rear axle is behind the seating cabin. I'd suspect rear-wheel drive cars may be a tad quieter than FWD cars due to the transmission (and esp. AWD), and manual also quieter than automatic. Etc.

I really thing your best option is to go out and start test driving any car that seems interesting to you and fits in the budget. Problem is, everyone is going to have different tolerances for noise and what they recommend might be intolerable to you.

Also, if you find a car that is reasonably quiet...remember that adding sound insulation to the car can have a very dramatic impact. If you find a car you really like, don't get too turned off if it's slightly louder than you like. It can be fixed with not a huge investment. You said you were willing to pay up to $2000...you could probably get the whole car done far cheaper than that.

Good luck!

Insulation will only help if you know what you're doing, do it properly, and spend a lot of time to do it.

Most people that are not experienced in insulating their vehicles interior can just make things worse. Break some panel clips, not align pieces properly, etc.

Plus in a lot of cheap cars the panels are so poorly made and designed, that once you take them apart, they literally fall apart and will forever vibrate and rattle.

Plus the money and time you spend on insulating will add up to more than just getting a better car to begin with.

Which is never cheap.

Unless you deal with some questionable joint, which will promise a professional job, but instead deliver half assed effort, done by grease monkeys that will destroy half your car.

And there goes my original point - its easier to just spend a little more on a better car to begin with. I haven't checked the numbers, but lets say your average used Accord or Camry run $3-4k more than a comparably used Civic or Corolla. They will be a lot more quiet to begin with, ride a lot better, have better audio and more options. So the initial $3-4k spent will be well worth it when, since you wont be spending money on insulation and other mods.

He said he was willing to spend $2k to get it done. He should be able to get it done for that much at an experienced, professional place. Obviously it would be better to find a car that is the way he wants it in the first place. If he can't, and finds a car that he likes but is slightly louder, he shouldn't automatically dismiss it.

I'm not going to argue about it, it's really quite simple. Besides, I'm sure he know quite well what his options are at this point.

Oh, I also wanted to point out that the Yaris is a little tank - drive train wise. (Sheet metal and point aren't the best)

My friend regularly tows a snowmobile and trailer through the hills in the western part of the province with his 2007 5-speed manual Yaris. At 150,000 kms, his brakes were still at over 50% and his clutch was like new. They are good cars, but I am sure that the Fit would be able to handle the same and still be more versatile.

a mate of mine just bought a 1.4 diesel yaris, coming from a 1.4 petrol micra its quieter and considerably more stable & quiet on motorways, of course, when you start it, like all diesels its a big tiny till it cools down. I should imagine the petrol one to be much nicer, also I drove a 1.6 auto one in work the otherday and was quite shocked at how fast it was for a small car.

i'm very fussy about noise, i've found one of the best things for road noise is to fit 4 matching michelin tyres, preferably the energy or primacy range (depending on type of car)

I also read in the news the other day that honda are bringing out a hybrid version of their jazz, at an actual affordable price range for a hybrid, its not my type of thing, and if you were thinking of going new might be worth a look
