vertex_shader is still being judged by the masses

ATI Technologies Gigabyte HD6850 fan cycle problem

I have the card, but there is a problem.
Fan running at 2D ~73% temperature ~40°C, and at 3D ~73% temperature ~58°C.
I checked the BIOS with Radeon BIOS editor, the fan cycle 22% until 55 °C and 27% at 58°C.

Gigabyte released a new BIOS based on the same version, all they do is changed the minimum fan cycle to 50%.
Without driver installed (i tried all Catalyst what support the HD6850) the fan running at 22% according to AIDA64.

Any idea whats next?

Tested in another computer, same issue.

Looks like not only Gigabyte cards affected.
XFX Issues Fix for HD 6850 High Idle Fan Speed

Quote:
XFX issues a BIOS fix after some users reported their HD 6850 cards running at 70% idle fan speed.

As HD 6850 cards are flying off the store shelves, more and more users have started reporting that XFX’s version that sports a custom heatsink exhibits extremely high idle fan speeds. This makes what should be a quiet card into a howling banshee in even the best of situations.

Supposedly this issue was only found in the first round of cards sent to retailers and subsequent shipments have it fixed through a modified BIOS.

While you're waiting for a fix, try installing MSI Afterburner and creating a custom fan profile.

Yeah, that's why I like the MSI fan profiles - nothing to remember and you can rely on it to ramp up as you want for different temperatures.
