So when we were staying with my parents (after I graduated, and was job hunting), my wife got into a routine of Tivo-ing her favorite shows and watching them while she works out. Now that we've moved out, I'd like to support her workout routine. Is there a good DVR that doesn't cost too much, doesn't require a subscription, and works with comcast? |

i think ours is 10 bucks for the 1st one and then 5 for each additional one. i would go with whatever your cable provider is or find somone who has a tivo lifetime sub and buy that (id prefer the latter ... tivo's are superior in every way to comcast boxes). i need to fix my series 1 tivo, it has lifetime but needs a new HDD. life without a dvr is life without living. i cant imagine going back. |

That depends on your cable company. Personally, I got my dad a Series 2 DT TiVo for fathers day last year and he loves it despite the subscription fee (subscription fee's for DVR's/PVR's are uncommon in Canada)

DVR's from cable companies are typically pretty crappy. New Tivos are to be announced March 2nd.

This has not been confirmed, however. It seems likely, though it could instead/in addition be a new UI for Series 3/HD. Tivo is definitely better than any other DVR, but, of course, that comes at a price.

Are there no DRVs one can buy that does not have some lame subscription along with it? I use air antenna, no cable, no sat.

It varies by cable company, but most cable companies use DVR's/PVR's, of various models, from Motorola. These DVR's/PVR's do not require a subscription fee.

This thread, on the AVS Forum, here seems to have some helpful info on models that work with OTA. *edit* EchoStar TR-50 seems to fit the bill perfectly

New Tivo's are disappointing to say the least. New flash UI, more space and faster. Still all the existing problems of the current models (still need cable cards and tuning adapters).

Yep. Unless there's some yet-uknown home media serving capabilities that substantially exceeds the TivoHD I see no reason to upgrade.
