Default AVIVO video converter

I'm having trouble with the AVIVO video converter on my new 5850's in win7 64.

Are avi files supported for input? because everytime I try to convert an avi file CCC just crashes saying it has encountered a problem and must close... I dont really have any other formats to test on this system, just have around 30 movies in avi format.

any ideas?

thanks

Not all .avi files are equal. I had problems, for example, trying to convert .avi files that were made using FRAPS. FRAPs uses some oddball codec to create the files and AVIVO converter couldn't do anything with them. In order for AVIVO to work with particular .avi files, you need to have the correct codecs installed.

Try installing the latest DIvX and also check out the K-Lite Codec installer. Google will get you there in a hurry.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply

Well I installed both divx and k-light codec pack and was able to convert some avi's while others still make CCC crash. They wern't made with FRAPS but tbh I have no idea how they were made, just a whole bunch of movies from a friend all in avi format..

Also I noticed in GPU-Z that there was no GPU load but the CPU was getting worked hard in task manager.... isnt the point of Avivo Video Converter to use GPU accelerated video transcoding?

and can you recommend any other program that makes use of the GPU for video converting?

thanks again

AVI is a container, not a format (so for example, avi can hold a divx video, or another codec, have mp3 audio, or uncompressed, etc)

what's the source of these videos? maybe you can run them through g-spot to figure out why avivo converter doesnt like them http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Gspot

finally, why do you need gpu encoding? (that is, are your cpu encodes going really slowly? i've tried avivo converter, & ray adams also made one utilizing ati stream, but they're lacking in tons of options that i need, so i'm stuck with using something like mediacoder to make x264 encoded videos)

Thanks kn00tcn, as you can probably tell I have very little experience with video encoding and that was actually a very helpful post.

and no my CPU encodes are not going really slowly, its just both my friend and I wanted to try it out after hearing how fast it's meant to be compared to CPU. I sold him my old 4870's and he does a lot of DVD burning etc and being an x-nvidia user he had heard great things about the speed of ATi GPU accelerated encoding, however we are both having trouble with AVIVO... everything from not recognising certain formats to simply crashing when trying to convert a format that it does accept... and then there is the quality of videos we actually managed to convert, but one thing at a time...

I noticed that Avivo (ATI's) transcoder wasn't using the GPU either, I used A's Video Converter as a front end for ATI's Avivo. In Vista (64 bit 10.1 hot fix + 10.1 xcode) the GPU was at 0% during transcode, CPU would go as high as 69%. If I booted to Win7 (64 bit - 9.12 Hotfix, 9.12 xcode, Stream 2.0 SDK) transcoding the very same .mpg file the gpu would go to about 19% usage and the cpu around 17%. It's apparent that ATI's own Avivo transcoder
isn't using the GPU in Vista with the latest drivers and xcode. I might try Cyberlink Media Expresso next, I think they have a 30day trial.

aaarrrghhh! mousewheel death!

to the OP - AVIVO only uses the codecs your system has installed. At a minimum you'll need AC3 Filter installed if you don't have anything else. For windows 7 I recommend Antipack and Shark007's codec pack.
