So I put this together during December, while job hunting. It's sortof a cheap prototype, but its alot of fun. ![]() ![]() Instead of buying individual input components and a control board, I bought some cheapo usb controllers off of Amazon. They really suck, and I had to mod them in order for them to be usable. They're fine now though, and the machine is very fun. It's 4 players for TMNT games, although I've realized that the outside controllers never use more than 2 buttons. I may mod the outside controllers further to get rid of the extra buttons. The inside controllers need more buttons for street fighter and mortal kombat. Having 4 sticks also makes the machine work for 2 player Smash TV. Eventually I will build a real arcade cabinet, but I'm poor right now, and will prolly move to the East coast as soon as I find work, so for now I am I using a shelf that my parents had laying around. I'm using my old laptop (4 years old now!), and a tv I bought second hand for $30. The controllers were $25 each, so I've sunk about $130 into this. It's fun though. My friends come over and play alot, and I've enjoyed putting it together. So far I've played: TMNT TMNT in time Pacman ms pacman Tetris Plus (My wife loves it) Smash TV Super Street Fighter 2 Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and 3 DigDug Rampage Golden Axe Space Harrier Aliens And I've been experimenting with playing NES, SNES, and Genesis games on it. Any recommendations for arcade games to play?

Jesus tap-dancing Christ. How can you talk about TMNT type games and not mention The Simpsons anywhere in that post? Also, more 4-player beat-em up games X-Men Captain America and The Avengers D&D: Tower of Doom D&D: Shadow Over Mysteria Another good beat-em up game was Aliens v Predator. Great puzzle game? Puzzle Bobble. There's also a plethora of good shmups but I can't remember names off the top of my head at the moment.

Well, Neo Geo had some great titles. The King of Fighter series, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown and many others. I've been wishing to buy a Neo Geo and some games for years now, but they're just insanely expensive. Maybe someday I'll try your solution. |

Haha oh man that's awesome. Fussy question: isn't going to be a little top heavy and unbalanced in case of some frantic joystick handling? ![]()

Holy ****. I forgot to mention Moonwalker. The arcade version. Nothing quite like turning into Mecha Mike to save some little children. Do believe it's also 3-player.

You guys knocked out some of the really awesome ones earlier and left me with the scraps! A couple more I'd suggest are: Streets of Rage Final Fight NBA Jam Captain America and the Avengers

Thinking of games that are good with joysticks: Metal Slug (series) Storm Troopers (series) Battle Toads Pulstar Blazing Star Bucky O'Hare Puzz Loop / Puzz Loop 2 (should be a DIP setting to use a joystick instead of a trackball/mouse) The Crystal of Kings Gauntlet Legends / Gauntlet Dark Legacy (if your PC can handle it) NARC Tattoo Assassins (c'mon, it is the only fighting game *with* Nudalities, serious )Killer Instinct Neo Turf Masters The Punisher Rampage / Rampge: World Tour (for quick games, extended play is BORING) Spiderman: The Videogame Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

SubCog - You should put Streetfighter vs Marvel and all those variety of games on there. My friend has a MAME box, and everyone that plays it always wants to play that series. Another vote for TMNT, Simpsons, and the Xmen Arcade game. Nice work!!! ![]() For SNES grab Clayfighters, Killer Instinct, Final Fight. They should be a lot of fun on there. For Genesis grab Streets of Rage 1,2,3, and Eternal Champions (preferably the Sega CD version with more characters) For the computer itself, if/when you have more money available I recommend getting a cheap desktop with an add-on video card. It doesn't have to be anything to brag about, but too many integrated video solutions have the Intel garbage that just runs awful. Last edited by Gator : Jan 2, 2010 at 08:27 AM. |

![]() The P4 1.7 should do the job just fine. My friend's MAME cabinet is a dual PIII and MAME works (yes I'm serious). |

I wonder if there ever will be a CUDA implementation of MAME so that it could run some of the more modern games a little better.

There is no computer on the planet that can play all games in MAME at full speed. That compy will do for a good many, but newer versions of MAME are more accurate and thus need more power to maintain 100% speed. While a good many mid-90's polygon based games used 3DFX Voodoo GPUs and high Mhz RISC CPUs, even some complex older games may not run full speed on that setup (i.e., Namco System 22 which did the original Ridge Racer and 3D shooters like Starblade that used a bunch of chips to create 3D back in the early 90s). One of the main issues is that MAME cannot be fully threaded due to timing issues. You'd think that you can simulate each component on a different thread, but due to the tight syncronization needed by many of these games, multithreading is largely used for only the video+effects vs. emulation. It does help though. Additionally, the 64-bit build of MAME is faster as it can utilize more CPU registers. All in in all, a 1.7ghz P4 is a bit weak if you want to be able to fire up anything. I mean, they're emulating the Naomi/Namoi2 hardware (i.e., arcade version of the Dreamcast) these days and that's all being done in software as they do not yet have a framework to accurately accelerate 3D using modern GPUs. It will likely happen, but given the complexity of numerous different types of PC GPUs and driver issues, the cross platform compatibility issues, and potential for many older systems to not be able to map easily to current PC GPUs, it has yet to be done and AFAIK is not underway. Basically, your best bet is to just build a system that runs the games you like right now and not plan for the future as the requirements may likely vary. Edit: As far as CUDA, likely not. OpenCL, potentially as MAME is meant to be non-proprietary and opened to any number of platforms and the Dev team stays away from things that may have licensing issues.
