Default Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Starz, the cable netlet, apparently wanted in on the whole 300/Rome thing baaaaad....soooo they ponied up for this show, which starts in January. We who are about to show trailer salute you:

Me, I'm willing to put up with the now-hackneyed speed-ramping and gratuitous CGI blood splatter for one reason:

USA did a miniseries adaptation of the story back in 2004, and there's no way most people who's even heard of the wonderful Kubrick epic would dare consider a new theatrical version. So a series was probably due--and almost certainly inevitable after 300, IMHO.

Flip side, the folks responsible for Legend of the Seeker (Rob Tapert, Sam Raimi, Joshua Donen) are responsible for this too. It could be an interesting experiment in what happens when you have a real budget and no rules...

Though as much while i watched it , it had the flavour of legend of the seeker about it... Which in my book is a winner

Thank you Neil for bumping it. The trailer looked very promising. Hope it's good enough.

Is Starz as gratuitous as Showtime in terms of nudity display?

horrible.

beyond words horrible.

Sure, a full noodie...a slo-mo fcking scene...some poorly worded bad-words for the sake of being "on cable" (welcome to 1989)....the 300 blood spatter effect....the spear throw...the horse bucking....the slo-mo fighting style.....waaay too many words....and all of it horribly acted.

all of it.

Clearly you need to call your cable company and ask for the FutureHD channel.

Got a screener of episode one and two.

Didn't watch 2......not sure if I will, part 1 was so bad.

Awful. The target audience must be mildly retarded fourteen year old boys who like comics.

Watched a screener for both episodes, the acting was pretty bad, but I didn't think it was horrible. The first screener was like a porno. The plot is kind of corny, but I love these kind of tv series/movies.

Watched the dvdrip and it's damn good , i enjoyed it from start to finish.. Yes the blood is abit over done for some minor flesh wounds but i still enjoyed it , has a touch of 300 in it

p.s The roman guy who hates Spartacus is one of my favourite actors , who plays as darken raul in Legend of the Seeker.

I watched it and I liked it,. the CGI blood was way way way over done but still looking good.. might have to put in my order for Starz in HD.. no Trublood/Dexter anytime soon..

Watched it last night for the first time here in Canada, TMNHD, and i'm having mixed feelings about it. Now i wasn't able to catch the whole thing from start to finish, that may have ruined my exp, but i'm not liking the acting thus far and i don't appreciate the silly bad language. Now i don't mind the language in general but IMHO someone screaming F*CK YEAH and similar doesn't sit well with this type of movie. Makes it feel cheesy and lame. Also, the fighting seems to cheap knock off of 300... too much slow-mo and exaggerated blood slices.

Dont get me wrong its not bad for being the first esp, it has potential, but personally it needs to tweak out these area's so it doesn't seem as cheesy. Thankfully i did PVR it so i'm going to watch it again tonight from start to finish to see if i can get a better feel for it.

I saw the first two episodes and I agree the nudity is over the top.. I don't want to see limp penis in my TV shows, generally speaking..

They seem to want to capitalize on the ITS A GUY TV SHOW OMG BADASS aspect of it, with the ridiculous amounts of blood, a lot that looks fake, and stupid dialogue a lot of the time (I don't need to hear 4 F-bombs and C-bombs in one sentence)

But at least the main actor, with his stoic demeanor, keeps the show going. I'll be watching it because I really enjoyed the film Gladiator, and I think the 2nd episode of the show was a lot better than the first.

I'm hoping HBO's Game of Thrones turns out well.

meh, it's Gladiator plot with (subpar) 300 style. I liked both movies, but so far Spartacus hasn't impressed me. The blood looks really fake, and the screen can be literally filled with blood, and yet in the next scene the character has no blood on him, reminds me of a video game. More like a violent softcore porn than a real series so far, but I'll probably give it a couple more episodes.
