Default Dog is sick, went to the vet and..

Iam so fed up right now, my dog has been sick for 2 days now, she drinks water but doesnt eat her food. I went to the vet, he gave her two injections, one of them was anti biotic and the other I dont know.

He also gave us diet food to give her (IF SHE ****ING EATS) and two meds we have to give her, one of them is called Metronidaole and the other called Metoclopramide, instructed us to administer it to her, but she will not take it no matter what, I cannot get her mouth open, she keeps moving her head away.

Me and 2 of my other buddies tried holding her down, but she keeps moving her head, Im afraid im gonna break a bone or something so we just stopped. What do you guys suggest ? She needs to take these meds, I cannot put it in her food because shes not eating.

Metronidazole - Antibiotic
Metoclopramide - Gastrointestinal stimulant (i.e., get things moving forward) / anti-emetic (decreased nausea/vomiting).

I always stuck pills in a hot dog slice or squished into some cheese. Seemed to work well.

If you had an oral syringe + tube, you could crush it up, mix it with applesauce and shoot it into her mouth, but that would be a last resort. I wouldn't recommend it as you may lose a portion of the dose doing it that way, but neither of those meds are controlled/extended release and should be able to be crushed or cut (just don't do it with a butter knife, they make and sell appropriate tools to crush and cut pills at grocery stores and pharmacies).

Peanut butter and a bit of muscle. Get it done.

The other injection was probably an injectable form of metaclopramide for any potential nausea.

Is your dog still defaecating? Bloody diarrhoea? Has she vomited at all? I usually prescribe metronidazole for stress colitis but your pup might have other issues, including early-stage pancreatitis.

Also, what kind of dog is she? If she's anything bigger than a Jack Russel, just grab the top and bottom jaws immediately behind the canines, open, shove tablets to back of throat with end of thumb. You won't get it in the wrong hole since the epiglottis will protect the larynx. And don't be wussy about getting your hand chewed on a bit. WHen your fingers are down the back of her gob she can barely bite.

However, if your dog is not eating, I generally stick to injectables. If she starts puking her guts up, get her rechecked and get bloods done.

She threw up a lot a few days ago, but its starting to slow down Im guessing because she isnt eating a whole lot, she threw up about an hour ago but it was the medicine I finally got down her mouth, or at least thats what I think it was, it was transparent slime like, not throw up per se, like kind of how we sometimes sneeze, but again it was white/transparent.

Man I really dont feel good about this, I feel sick as well now because shes sick, I dont know what I would do if I lost her. It happened all of a sudden few days ago, she was doing fine and then she started to throw up and diarrhea.

The vet offered us a 2 day stay, would cost 500 dollars, I think thats what im probably gonna do now if she doesnt get better, I just hope they find the cause of this, I feel terrible.

She now wont even touch her food, the vet said thats good and to give it ice cubes instead of plain water. What a ****ty thanksgiving and christmas im gonna have

My dog had the similar things going on. She threw up yellowish/brownish bile from not eating (or being hungry?).

I also had to give her an antibiotic administered orally with a syringe. She also did her best to make administration of said medicine as difficult as possible, moving her head... etc.

But she's like 18 pounds..... so.... it was just a matter of how slippery she could be versus how trapped I could make her.

thx guys, well 1 good news is that shes eating now, I tried everything in the fridge and the thing that worked is HAM, she loves it, actually follows me with the food. I didnt give her too much, just enough to get some energy back into her and not watch her starve herself, that is by far the worst thing, watching my dog get skinny and weak, shes lost a lot of weight. Hopefully she holds the food inside, its been almost an hour and no throw ups.

If you got prescribed the ID dry food (hill's prescription), that should do her some good. That's what the vet made me buy.

Smart. The last thing you want is to upset her system even more, just enough to give her some energy.

Best of luck I hope she gets better soon. My dog has been a bit sick herself the last few days, the one night she was in a pretty bad way. She's been slowly getting better and eating mostly normally, I have no idea what set her off unfortunately. She puked up a few times, yellowish/clear liquid, and a couple of times pooped out something mostly clear.

BTW, I've been feeding her this brand food and find it very good, but would like an experts opinion on it. So far it's probably the best I've found.

Whilst ham isn't the best, at all, it's going to be better than nothing, in small amounts. Try to get chickin and rice going (Hills I/D is about right).

If the vomiting persists with the Metomide, and the defeacation stops for longer than 24 hours, get some gut radiographs done to make sure there isn't a partial obstruction. It's not likely, but it is possible. Sounds more like acute gastro to me.

Isn't that similar to something you would give to counteract motion sickness? It's designed to just keep the food down but not treat the actual problem is this correct?

Yup. It's just there to suppress the nausea. However, Metomide is contraindicated in the event of an intestinal blockage; if you give it, and the dog still vomits, you don't up the dose, you get it checked out. Actually, my preferred anti-emetic these days is maropitant.

Thanks, good to know. BTW you should fix the Wiki entry for maropitant it has almost no info.

Has your dog eaten something that could have blocked her guts? Our dog has had blocked guts couple a times and been very sick but paraffin oil has helped always (gets the stuff moving).

Quick update, shes doing much better now, eating normally, only healthy food , and shes gaining her weight back, the first day she slept the entire day after eating her meal. I used about 3 bottles of pedialyte on her, shes running around crazy right now, happy, back to her old stuff again. Whatever was in that medicine did the trick. She just did her poop, I thought there was blockage bec, but thats not the case, it was nice and solid.

Anyways, got an appointment for her to get chipped, all her shots, hair cut, etc next week.

As for the type of dog, I dont know, any guess ? on the paper it says french poodle mix, doesnt look like one though

thx for all your help guys.

Oh if you were wondering who administered the meds to her, our neighbor is a nurse, she single handedly got the medicine down when 3 guys couldnt, pretty hilarious. She held the legs with her hands and put her upside down and there was nothing she could do but take the meds
