Thumbs up Humane lobster killing with a twist...

1- Some random guy creates a "humane" way to kill lobster...

Christopher Basten, chef de cuisine of the Oak Room Restaurant in Surrey, England, uses a prototype of the CrustaStun machine to kill a lobster before cooking. (Gill Allen / Times Newspapers Ltd.)

2- PETA organizes an event to demonstrate

The animal rights group PETA bought two of the lobster devices and paid for Mr. Buckhaven and his wife to fly to the Arizona event last Saturday to demonstrate the technology.

3- courier lost shipment

Unfortunately, the courier service lost the two machines...

4- Profit

...and the animal rights people had to look the other way as volunteers killed hundreds of lobster in boiling water for hungry supporters of the resource centre.

i've never actually cooked live lobster myself, but i have caught fresh yabbies and cooked them by dropping them straight into a pot of boiling water over a fire .

There's a reason they are loud as **** when you put them in a boiling pot.

It's the same **** with the fish thing, There has to be a way to kill it before boiling that will stop it from suffering.

haha funny isn't it, some of us look down on other cultures/races for eating fish alive, searing their flesh with hot oil, but when it comes to boiling lobsters alive thats completely normal...

Good for them that I don't think they taste very good or I may have a change of heart.

Positive, as a matter of fact I will probably go buy a lobster tomorrow from my local Ranch 99 market and boil it and then grill it
I will try to capture a video of the feast and upload it to youtube for your viewing pleasure...screaming free of course

I'd rather not see an animal being boiled alive.

Since you do that often, have you ever thought to kill it before you cook it?

Cut it's head off then boil it?? Does that affect the way it's cooked and the taste?
Just to satisfy curiosity, I don't know anyone where I live that eats lobster..

You don't cut the lobster head off (I wouldn't know how if I wanted to ) instead you place a sharp knife behind its eyes and push down to cut its brain in half.

Ah, so there is a relatively easy and quick way to do it.

So I wonder, why do people continue to throw a living creature into a boiling pot of water then?

If there is any noise it's a faint whistling. That's just steam escaping from the shell.

As for the "scream," there's the problem that lobsters have no throat, no vocal cords, no lungs, so how could they scream at all? The fact is that the noise is caused by air trapped in the shell. When heated it expands and forces itself out through small gaps, causing the sound.

Crustaceans aren't too far off from insects. If anyone is really worried about live-boiling lobsters, just stick to vegetables.

MMM Lobster!!!

We've always steamed the lobster, not boiled. Boiling takes the flavors away, which may be why so many people don't like lobster, and waste the whole thing so they can eat the tail.

I always give away my tails, trade them for bodies (nobody trades legs ) The body is more work, but it's worth it. The meat is like crab meat in texture, but that isn't the prize. The prize is one of two or both: Caviar: The orange stuff....lobster eggs; and Tamale: the green stuff....yeah, it's flavor is intimidating at first, but if you find you like the taste, you will be jonesing for tamale the rest of your days...and be disappointed when you find none in your lobster.

As for this device, I'm not sure how humane it can be, since making something which is alive stop being alive is not easy or painless. It's death by electrocution. Like the human electric chair, you aren't sure the person is dead until a doctor says so, and many times they determine that they are still alive, so they order another round of shocks.

Is it a better approach than steaming or boiling? Is there less pain involved with electrocution? Does it even matter since the animal will die whether we chop it in half (alive) and toss it in boiling water to make lobster base, or electrocute it until dead then boil or steam or chop in half?

Personally, it looks like an item that isn't necessary in kitchens, but will fill a small niche audience. And at 100,000 a pop, you don't need many buyers to stay in business.

I've been told that if you stick them in the freezer for 20 minutes or so to stun them and then drop them into a steamer pot with already boiling water in it, by the time you can count to about 15 the lobsters are dead and didn't have a chance to feel anything. If you stab them (or most anything else) in the head they will be dead pretty much instantly. Besides, how many of you are against using neurotoxins on insects to kill them in a slow, horrible manner? Just get a good insecticide and spray a bug and watch how long it actually takes for the bug to die, and watch how it writhes and convulses first. It can take several minutes for the insect to finally expire. Boiled alive and dead in 15-20 seconds isn't too bad compared to that. Eaten alive by a fish is also much slower and more painful, I'm sure.

Mmmmmm...lobster...

I just drop a few large rocks in a pot, stuff some parsley, rosemary, thyme in there, pop lobsters and go!
