Default What is the "ATi Catalyst Install Manager"?

Note that I'm not asking what are the Catalysts . I say this because the only answer that I've found in the web is "Catalyst is the sw to control ATi video cards" or similar.

---------------------------------

The previous question is a "standalone" one, but feel free to comment on my particular relation with this program.

I'm in the process of installing Vista 32 Ultimate (SP1 for the moment) in this rig:

- Phenom II X4 955 (3.2GHz)
- ATi HD4890 (Club3D Superclocked Edition @ 950/1050)
- AM3 790FX motherboard (Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P)
- 2x2GB DDR3-1333
- 26" LCD monitor, 640GB HD, assorted cards and peripherals

The "ATi Catalyst Install Manager" appeared when intending to install the mobo chipset drivers downloaded from Gigabyte's web ( motherboard_driver_chipset_amd_7series-v2.0_vista32_novga.exe ). I hadn't installed any Catalyst thing before, hence the vcard was without powerplay yet, what is quite noticeable because the fan spins fast and loud as if the card were loaded with 3d work (idle and with powerplay on it's silent).

Windows had already installed drivers on its own for most or all of the mobo devices, and the Gigabyte's file didn't install or update any (unless it did it slilently). But it did install some Catalyst thing that, at first, I judged as a Catalyst driver (although I haven't installed any 3d app yet), because it provided powerplay (the card became silent and much more cooler), a part of the Gigabyte driver's file structure seems to correspond to a Catalyst, and it also installed some typical registry stuff. I couldn't read any version number though (among other reasons because the thing includes shortcuts to CCC, but not the CCC itself).

This was some weeks ago. I didn't care more about it for the time being, as I was busy with other issues.

Today I've made a new attempt with the same Gigabyte driver, and the Vista UAC has requested my permission to run "Catalyst Install manager" (likely it did the same the 1st time, but I cannot remember now). I've cancelled. Under Control Panel -> Programs and features there's an "ATI Catalyst Install Manager" entry, with the date of my first attempt.

Now my dilemma is if I uninstall or keep this before installing a true Catalyst driver, like the 9.10 which is the newest one just now. What is the "Catalyst Install manager" for? What does it do? What are its advantages and shortcomings? I've got experience updating Catalysts manually so I feel that I don't need it, but I'm open to consider its advantages if I know what they are!

Are you ****ing kidding me? It is software that is used to install or uninstall various Catalyst software components & motherboard chipset drivers just like the bloody name of the application implies. Sheesh. How about using some common sense next time?

Just because you have drivers installed doesn't mean they are the latest. If you don't install the CIM then you wont have the latest drivers.

well whenever i install new cats, they always say they're updating my older installed version of cat install manager

hmm C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\Bin64
when i run setup, i can choose to install or uninstall ati things

so it's just what it says it is, manages anything ati (even though it says catalyst)

Thanks for the info, very useful. More than common sense, I didn't know about a pair of concrete things.

This is my first AMD mobo chipset and I didn't know that "Catalyst Install Manager" has to do with them too. "Catalyst" had an exclusively graphic meaning for me before. Now I know why it got installed with the motherboard drivers. I also assume that the relevant drivers got updated if needed, although instantly and silently, without noticeable echo or delay of any kind (with a blind test, you couldn't tell, or hardly, which computer -in the conditions mine was- is installing this file and which one is installing the graphic Catalysts). Hence my confusion .

I remember in fact the "CIM" thing as belonging to the graphic Catalysts (I believe that I had seen it in the ZA programs lists) but I hadn't associated it with "Catalyst Install Manager". My fail . But knowing it well I would never try to disable or separate it lol .

Many things have changed in Vista and in the hw since my previous NF3 based build with XP. Installing, understanding and configuring the sound has taken a good pair of hours of googling and "binging" . The Vista mixer seems a cool thing but at first I wasn't understanding why there were "speakers" and "Windows sounds" levels only in it, where had gone the "wave", "sw synth" etc levels (the "classic" mixer in general), and where were the cd-in and stereo mix recording levels (yes, it's very simple, you have to go to Control Panel -> Sound and right click on one of the recording devices enabled and showed by default, but you have to know this in advance! ).

btw: these funny retractable trays (in the upper frontal part with "4X" or similar inscriptions) seem a bit flimsy for a beer, aren't they?
