Was on the way home today and my front tires are WELL past the wear bars so I had to order them before winter came because just light rain they hydroplain so much. So I buckled down and oredered 4 235/40R-18 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 Green X XL Read some pretty good things about them so we will see. Apparently even in dry weather they are quite the performers. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Comp are1=yes

Whatever works, I guess. They look like good tires if you want something that is good all-around.

Edit was a little off, but compared to the GS-D3 (Pretty much the best street/corning tire with largest surface rubber) (OUT OF A 10.0 SCALE) Cornering Stabillity is .2 off Dry Traction is .3 off Steering Response is Identical Wet Traction is .2 off Hydroplaining is .1 Higher And this is from a winter tire, dare I put the rest of the stats? It will destroy the best Ultra High Performance Tire. Also they are rated for a higher payload than what my vehicle is, which means stronger sidewalls for my car which would actually bump up all those dry stats for me. So..... Yeah.. Only downside is the R(106mph) rating. But its a street tire so that shouldn't be a problem And I won't even post the stock Bridgestone Potenza RE-40s that i have on there now. It just out right destroys it (it's like 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 8.5, vs the Pilots, 8.8,8.8,9.0,9.1, etc. At the end of the day these will still be a winter set. And when everyone else cant grip in the 25 degree weather I will put bus lengths on them.

They will not outperform your GS-D3's in dry traction. These tires are rated the best in their own category, not ALL categories. They are the best of all the Performance Winter tires. They aren't made to compete with the top tier Max Performance Dry Tires, because quite simply...they are winter tires. If you want maximum performance in dry weather, you need tires that are designed purely for dry weather grip. You're going to lose a lot of dry traction if you use those tires year-round. If you never drive the car hard then it doesn't matter... EDIT: You need to compare tires of the same category man...

Umm, last I checked the scale (Outside the 1-100%, and ranked category) the scale is still universal. I still fail to see your reasoning of why these wouldn't be good for not wanting a tire that will roll over itself in thet corners during winter? And then swapping back to summer tires in the summer? Kinda seems like a useless arguement.

Yeah, I'm sticking with normal winter tires. In new england I'm more worried about getting home alive than pulling 0.98g in the corners bro. |

Each tire should only be compared to tires in their own category. Would you honestly expect a winter tire that gets a 9.5 in dry traction to do better than say a Nitto Drag Radial that gets a 9? Besides, look at the chart. It plainly says "Rank in Category" and "% Vs Best in Category". Quote:

I guess its just the type of person I am, I cannot stand rolling over in the corners. I had planned on getting the blizzaks but they seemed to be way too soft for my likings. Like I said we dont get the worst snows here, but we do get some pretty decent ones that dont get plowed for awhile. And if these tires dont get me to work, IMO I shouldn't be going. Works for me... Guess because I have the car saved. But like i said at the end of the day, this is a winter set, and maybe early spring set. Then when I get the funds, get a summer set and make both last as long as possible so Im not pitching the tires out once a year.

Definitely better in warm or dry pavement than the Contis were, so I guess it's really for people who see only a little snow.

These threads make me . I love having the luxury of not having to dump an insane amount of money on winter/snow tires. All seasons + Transfer case = Snow ready. ![]()

I wonder why I see so many more multi-ton SUV's in ditch upside down/on their side in a snow bank than I do of other vehicles... Oh that patch of black ice made their all seasons act like ball bearings... ![]()

With that being said, if you know how to drive, AWD/4WD and all seasons will be more then enough to get you through a moderate NON-CANADIAN winter.

LOL, I realized something... We had this same argument last year, and we'll come to the same conclusion... If you know how to handle a vehicle, and your not driving on skating rink ice(had that happen last year, gust of wind, and I was in the ditch) all seasons are fine, just have to exercise a little more caution.

Well let's see how this winter goes. I have a set of Firestone Destination LE's w/ <5,000 miles on my 98 AWD for this winter. I had a few incidents with ice skate rink ice last winter. one was by a stop sign. luckily the other street was unoccupied, and i was only going about 15-20mph anyway. Kinda slid through the stop. Another one was trying to make a u-turn by my house and accidently got into the throttle a bit more then i wanted to and wound up spinning my back end out as i came around the turn; wasn't really a big issue but i kinda looked like an ass /
