Default 5870 Temp. Tweaking

Today, I would like to share my experience with all you about tweaking my 5870.

All of you know that 5870 is a long card, and the SATA cable of my P5K just block a little bit for air go in.
I finally use the angled cable on my MB and found that the noise from the fan and also the temp slightly go down.
So I suggest you to clear the area near the 5870's fan.

on 12/Oct the 1.2 MSI AfterBurner was out!!
IMO this is much better than ATi tool/Ati Tray tool.
If you have a Logitech G series Keyboard, the LCD monitor can show the
GPU Temp/Clock/Usage/Voltage and also the fan speed!!!
And the most impressive feature from AfterBurner is the curve type fan control.
I was using ATi tool for fan control when I was using a 4870 but the fan will jump from let say 30% to 40% or you need to set many checkpoint for the fan control.
So I fire up the Furmark burn mode to see how high temp will go with my HIS 5870.
The highest Temp is 86C, since over 85C the fan will start to spin @ 37% and temp will go down to 82~83.
The below list of fan speed was recorded after the card cooldown from the Furmark.

5870 @ 850/1200 Fan auto mode:

85C 37%
80C 33%
75C 30%
70C 28%
60C 25%
50C 23%
45C 22%
40C 21%
38C 21%

I found out that my PSU fan will start to make noise when I ran some 3D program.
So I need to maunal set the fan speed on idle to check if the fan noise. 20~28% is almost silent for me I can hear a little bit sound start from 30%, I would say 40% is the max for me.
I start tweaking the fan speed with the AfterBurner and finally find a best table for mine.

5870 @ 850/1200 Tweaked Fan speed mode

100C 50%
90C 43%
85C 40% ( by Curve)
80C 38%
75C 37% ( by Curve)
70C 35%
65C 32% ( by Curve)
60C 30%
50C 25%
30C 20%

I fire up Furmark again, the temp is stable @ 82C no more up and down.

and all of the temp in game go down like 3~5C as below
NFS:S 74C to 69C
SF4 71C to 66C
3Dmark 78C to 74C
Furmak 86C to 82C

The last but not the least, I found that the back plate of 5870 is very hot @ load, after some search from the reviews.
I am quite sure the Back plate is somehow connected to the Heatsink base, so heat from the core and memory just tranfer to the back of the card. So I add some Ram sink (from my Thermalright HR03-GT) on the back plate.
You know what? The temp go down another 2C and now Furmak never over 80C.
I think most of you can find some spare ram sink or even northbrige HS . just put them on the backplate and you will see the magic! (Dont forget to get them some thermal pad from your old VGA card)

Sorry for my bad english since I am from Asia

excellent

i also can feel my backplate on my 4870x2, especially where the memory chips are located, it gets really hot

(also that's pretty good english)

i prefer tweaking the bios on the video card instead of using another bloatware or process running on my computer. I tweaked my 4870x2 and im very happy.

First of all having the fan idle at 30% idle improve things ... and have it to react faster too. If i remember the stock bios fan idle at 26% and to nothing until it reach 85-90C and only then it start to ramp up.

In RBE i have set
Tmin 60
Tmax 85
Trange 40
Min duty cycle 30%
Temperature target 75c update every 4 seconds
Hysteresis 5
PWM ramp 3 seconds
Dynamic mode

dunno about the 5870 series .. i have heard it's difficult to flash them ... anyway we will see later. For me im waiting for the 5870x2 or 5900Xt or whatever they will call it ... hemlock for now i guess

ohh and Afterburner = Rivatuner ..... same thing. MSI purchased a Rivatuner license.
