Question X1950Pro or HD3650 (AGP)

Hi All,

As I do not (yet) have the money to buy a completely new system,
am I looking to give my ageing system some new life.

I can buy a second hand Club3D X1950Pro for € 40,- or I can buy a new Sapphire HD3650 for € 70,-.

What is the wisest buy?

Maybe if you folks focused on what your own government is doing instead of worrying about how America is spending its money, you could build a real space program of your own.

What the man said.

Still, if you must buy AGP, then the 1950 Pro is the faster card, IIRC.

You'd see a very nice performance bump moving to the X1950 Pro from the X800XT you're using now. I made a similar move a few years ago from a X850XT PE and went through several of the best AGP cards at the time. After using a X1950XT, 7950GT, and 7800GS+, the Pro stood out as the best perfromer for the dollar. So I'd save the € 30 and go for the Pro, it's a good match for your rig. Your power supply appears to be more than man enough for the job as well.

Don't know which one you're getting, but just a heads-up on the Visiontek and Gecube X1950 Pro. They both use the same PCB and they both lack a temp-diode on the card so the fans run 100% 24/7 and no temp monitoring. Not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to a X1950 Pro as they do run very warm.

Good luck with the card.

Also, Acroig is indeed correct, the X1950 Pro is generally faster than the HD 3650 which more or less perfroms like a HD 2600XT. It does of course have newer features such as DX10.1 of course.

That was my recollection. The Pro was great at DX9, much faster than the 3600 line. The 3650 is too slow for 10.1 anyways.

It would be strange choice to buy a x1xxx card now since they are legacy products and will eventually stop getting updates all together not to mention that they aren't DX10 and lots of games are making the 2xxx cards the minimum card plus you wont get drivers for Windows 7 for a x1xxx card unless you use the Vista ones so dont get all the features.

Yeah, I know, it needed mentioning though.

I know it is a bit strange to buy a legacy card, but my system is a legacy system. And I am just looking to postpone buying (needing/wanting to buy) a new system for about 12 months or so.

I do not play the newest games, but lately I had a couple of games I tried that needed at least a shader model 3.0 card.

I have decided to buy the X1950Pro card, mostly because it is the cheapest of the 2.

Thanks for the advice

While Spyre makes a good point I think you made a good buy. Enjoy!

Well there is the ongoing rumor that there will be HD4650/4670 in AGP, that would be delicious if you wait (Q3 2009?). Maybe try to find a "used" HD 3850 AGP?

Red face

I've already bought the X1950Pro. It turned out that the guy selling it works in the same town as I do.

Now I am tempted to buy a second hand Athlon X2 4200+ for s939...

I wouldn't jump on the 4200. I did that exact upgrade (see sig) and saw little to no benefit. The 800xl to 1950pro was a decent improvement though.

From what CPU, a Barton? That can't be right. You should have seen a boost in any new game that is multi threaded, not to mentio video encoding, etc.

No, from an a64 3000 which I gave to my buddy.

This was when the dual cores first came out a few years ago.. no new multithreaded games, no video encoding back then. I still doubt it would make much difference today.
