Default 4850x2 + 4850 crossfire

will a crossfire setup between these two cards be worth it

Sapphire 4850x2 - 1gb
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102813

Asus 4850 - 512mb (what i have right now, no longer on new egg or i'd have linked that)
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1307...512-mb-gd.html

will it be a waste of money vs just getting a second 4850?

what will the total memory and processing power?

will it act almost like 4850's in tri sli?

You need an ATI 4850 1GB because of the ATI 4850X2 would read 512MB.

Well I don't have any experience with such a setup, but if past evidence is anything to go by, it's probably the best choice of setup. I recall in many cases with the 3870x2 and sometimes the 4870x2, doubling up on those cards actually resulted in worse performance than simply using an X2 crossfire'd with another single-core card. I can only imagine that with two X2's, there must be some serious bottlenecking.

Hopefully someone will bench a 4850x2 + 4850 Crossfire setup eventually... I'm curious myself.

So the 48xx's are capable of tri-fireX, as long as they're 1gig's?
Has anyone got any links to proof of this?
I've tried the tri-fire with my 4870x2 and a 4870 512. It didn't turn out to be good.

The reason for wanting all the same memory size is that the drivers have to use lowest common denominator for all three GPU's; clock speed, memory speed, memoy size. So if you have a 512mb card and two 1Gb cards, the 1Gb cards will effectively only use 512mb as otherwise AFR won't work.

I haven't seen any succesful HD48x0 series tri-fire yet, but I'm sure somebody has made it work.

"but I'm sure somebody has made it work"
If they have, they sure have kept it a secret. I've googled this and came up with info on tri-firing with a 512.

I got it to work. I actually wrote the most thorough article using a 4850X2 + 4850 in TriFire I have seen to date. I have compared a single, dual, and triple crossfire, the effects of overclocking, and cpu scaling amongst many recent games and benchmarks. Check it out (it is detailed and should clear up ANY ideas you may have had for it) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/25...x4-4850x2-4850
